Furnas County CCC Camp

Body
According to Christine Weaver, the CCC Camp at Beaver City brought over 200 young men together to work the radius of about 15 miles of Beaver City. The camp was located just north of the old high school on what is now the fair grounds. The camp consisted of five barracks for the enlisted men. There was a recreation hall, bath house, hospital, mess hall, kitchen, head quarters building, foreman's quarters, officers quarters building, a garage, and a technical service building. There were also two army trucks and an ambulance. The Soil Conservation Service also furnished 15 to 20 trucks. One of those buildings was later moved into town and served as the American Legion for a number of years. The building was sold and used for a house for a short time and then in 1981 became the Friendship Center Church.

Soddies and Dugouts

Body
In 1874, My great grandfather came to Furnas County in a covered wagon and purchased homestead from a man who was afraid of the Indians for $450. How would you like to buy a section of land for that price today?? There was already a log house on the property so my great grandfather did not have to live in a soddie or a dugout as many of the early settlers to Furnas County did. Recently, I came across a poem written by Emanuel Peters from Guide Rock, Nebraska entitled Early Day Dugout that I thought I would share with you.
