CAMBRIDGE – As Pam Frecks surveyed her parents’ yard with the house now in rubble, she commented, “It looks so different. I can’t believe it’s the same place.” The farm, now owned by an older sister, was home to Pam from the time she was 11 until she left home for college.

10 years ago American Legion Auxiliary poster winners for sixth grade were Danielle Forster, Kent Rae, and Mandi Hodgson; fifth grade winners Kimberly Halouska, Julieann Puls and Marian Stauffer; fourth grade winners Juan Flores, Tripp Hodgson, and McKenzie Clouse; and a special category Avery Gerken, Ty Jorges, and Kevin Schneider. FCCLA members sponsored a dance this spring and gave the profits to the Elwood Library.

CAMBRIDGE – Range and Forage Specialist, Jerry Volesky, headquartered in the University of Nebraska Extension Office in North Platte, was one of several speakers who addressed area producers impacted by the wildfires during a May 5 dinner sponsored by Arrow Seed.

10 years ago Jason Daffer of Danbury, son of Steve and Sally Daffer, and Ryan Timmerman of Indianola, son of Norm and Sharon Timmerman graduated Saturday from Hastings College. Kenzie May earned 5th place cleared the bar at 5’2” and was the only Southwest entrant to win at the State Track Meet in Omaha.

Lucas Haag knows the Southwest Nebraska area well. Long before he received his Ph.D. and began his tenure as Extension Agronomist and Associate Professor for the K-State Northwest Research Center in Colby, Kansas, he graduated from high school from Republican Valley in 2001.

Friday, April 22 began as what locals would call a nice day. Morning temperatures were in the 70s. It was sunny. There was a breeze, but nothing like the howling winds that had seemingly haunted the area for weeks.

Tucked against a wall behind a loveseat in her mother’s sitting room; the historic W.H. Faling House that serves as Cambridge’s grand Bed and Breakfast, are a couple of duffle bags and a tote filled with photos, negatives, and mementoes.

10 years ago Cambridge boys track and field team took home a state title from the Class D State Championship Track Meet in Omaha Saturday. Cal and Desiree Wineland, twenty-four year Army vets, honored fellow camaderies for Armed Forces Day this weekend by hosting a barbecue at their Vineyard.

Between Arapahoe, Cambridge, Southwest, Hi-Line, and Southern Vallley, thirtythree athletes represented Southwest Nebraska at the 2022 State Track and Field Championships in Omaha. These schools brought home a total of twenty state medals.

10 years ago Salutatorian Reid Stagemeyer and valedictorian Ashley McCoy are the 2012 for Arapahoe High School. Rochelle Wendland, a sophomore of Arapahoe High School went to the 2012 Nebraska State Track and Field Championship on Friday and Saturday and came home Sunday night with Class C gold medal in girl’s high jump event.
