KEARNEY - Eleven local runners took part in Friday’s Class D State Cross Country Meet in Kearney. In the girls’ race, Cambridge’s Lydia McGowen led area runners with a 25th place finish, leading the Trojans to a 17th place finish as a team.

High reaches plea deal, convicted of four felonies

STOCKVILLE - At a district court hearing Wednesday, a former Maywood teacher pleaded no contest to four felonies and was convicted of each after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors earlier. Nick High, age 30 of Bertrand, pleaded no contest to counts of Attempted Manufacture Visual Depiction of Sexually Explicit Conduct, a Class II felony, Sexual Abuse by a School Employee, a Class IV felony, and two counts of Child Abuse, a Class IIIA felony.

Southwest concludes unbeaten regular season, playoffs begin Friday

PAXTON - In a final tuneup before the Class D6 playoffs begin this week, the Southwest football team capped an 8-0 regular season with a 55-13 victory at Paxton Thursday night. With the regular season complete, Southwest claimed the third seed in the 16-team playoffs, which begin Friday.

by Kathy Long As a relatively new member of the book club at Butler Memorial Library, I have enjoyed reading a variety of books and then discussing them at our monthly meetings. However, our latest book, titled ‘Once Upon A Town’ caught me by surprise. The book tells the story of the North Platte Canteen during World War II.

Dedication Ceremony at Fairview Cemetery

When Sondra Jonson approached Cambridge’s Fairview Cemetery Board with the idea of donating a sculpture to the cemetery, entitled Rachel Weeping for her Children, board member Virginia Roberts knew the ideal place for it. She suggested that it be placed near the graves of the nine Bohemian flash flood victims from 1885, six of whom were children. These graves are located in the southwestern part of the cemetery, in an area overlooking the Republican River Valley. Sondra and the board members envisioned it as a place of peace and prayer for those who are grieving.
