In the wake of multiple cases of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud in Nebraska this week, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is reminding those with EBT cards to take preventive measures to protect their benefits.

Cambridge City Council met in regular session on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. All council members were present for the meeting. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the Open Meeting Law Announcement, the council approved the consent agenda, which included the minutes from the previous City Council Meeting, the claims, the Library Board meeting minutes, a SDL for Town Talk for March 23, 2026 for the Pheasants Forever Banquet, as well as a SDL for HoJo’s for February 14, 2026 for the Chamber Banquet.

The prestigious Tri Valley Medical Foundation Merle Jane Harpst Awards were presented to one licensed and one non-licensed Tri Valley Health System employee at the Tri Valley Health System Holiday Party held on Saturday, December 6th. The Merle Jane Harpst award was established in 1998 to honor the late Merle Jane Harpst and her 20 plus years as an employee and administrator at Cambridge Memorial Hospital and Tri Valley Health System. The award is organized and presented by the Tri Valley Medical Foundation.

Virginia “Ginny” Bortner was surrounded by her family when she passed away at the homeplace north of McCook on Friday morning, January 2, 2026, after suffering from Alzheimer’s for ten years. She was 70 years of age.

Arlene Newcomb, 93, of Bartley passed away Monday, December 29, 2025, at Highland Park Retirement Community in McCook. Arlene Marie Gramm was born on the family homestead north of Bethune, Colorado on September 20, 1932.

Adelaide Fay Unger, formerly of Stratton, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 in Columbus, Nebraska. She was 73 years of age.
