Winter Sports? This week?

I’ve written before about how, if you work at a weekly newspaper long enough, there is a natural flow to things.

Each year, when Thanksgiving comes around, it’s a reminder that winter sports are soon to follow.

So, imagine me Sunday when it occurred to me that it’s Thanksgiving weekend. “Hey dummy, there’s games this week!”

It’s going to be a weird winter sports season. Limited fans, if any at all, will dot the bleachers at ball games and wrestling or swimming meets. You best save the link to your favorite school’s video streaming service or keep a radio handy.

However frustrating, I am just glad that they get to compete, even if it’s a little different without mom or dad and grandma or grandpa there to share in the thrills of accomplishment and agonies of defeat.

There are going to be moments when that frustration boils over. Namely, it’s going to be tough on wrestling parents and fans. From a logistical standpoint, there’s not enough room to accommodate athletes, coaches and spectators in our local gyms.

Just remember, the folks in charge that are making these decisions are doing the best they can. No one wants to keep you from watching your son or daughter compete. We also want our local competitors to get the best experience possible.

There are no great answers right now, only those we choose to live with. We’re going to have to live with this for a little while longer.
