Cambridge American Legion unit 199 preparing for Veterans Day dinner

Cambridge Unit 199 of the American Legion Auxiliary met in regular session in the Community Building with 11 members present. After Presentation of the Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer and Preamble President Witte called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The minutes of the September meeting were read. Sue made a motion to approve the minutes; Connie seconded.
Pres. Witte introduced our new member Kathy McConnell from Beaver City, formerly of Golden, CO.
Pres. Witte gave the treasurer a bill for our District 9 assessment. She and Jo read thank you notes from Norma Wymore’s and Joy Feeken’s families for the flowers we sent to their funerals. Charla presented a bill for the 50 Pledge Allegiance to the Flag booklets and 50 Halloween coloring sheets. Pat Young made a motion we pay the bill, Barb seconded. Motion passed. Charla will give the Flag books to the 4th grade in April (Children and Youth month) and the Halloween coloring sheets to the 2nd graders.
Charla said she would like our Christmas cards to servicemen as soon as possible, but we can wait till the November meeting.
Jo Lewis reported for membership that we’re still short dues from 4 members. Jo also reported on our Nebraska Life Magazine subscription liaison. Norma Wymore was in charge of that. Mary Lou will take over that project.
Sue Witte talked to counselors from Cambridge and Arapahoe about Veterans Day, Poppy posters, Jr. Law Cadet program, and scholarships. The counselors will give poppies to the veterans at the Veterans Day programs.
President Witte read a letter from Peggy Kennedy, Distr. 9 president. She informed us about Paid up for Life Memberships. The Oratorical Contest is Oct. 30, at McCook Jr. High. They are looking for volunteers to judge the contest. Nov. 6, at 2:00 p.m. will be the Fall Roundup in Indianola. District 9 Convention is March 19, at the McCook Fairgrounds. The Department Convention is June 24-26, in Columbus. She spoke about creating a Time Capsule for our units. Dollar Day distribution dates were listed. She reminded us that scholarship applications are due March 1st. Her project this year is to make wheelchair bags.
President Witte asked for discussion on whether we have a Veterans Day dinner on our next meeting date, Nov. 11. After discussion, Mary Lou suggested we prepare for the dinner and if Covid requires, we can cancel. Everyone agreed. It’s scheduled for noon on Veterans Day. We’ll bring our food around 11:30.
There was no new business. Sue Witte reported on our active duty local military members.
The meeting adjourned at 3:00. Virginia and Pearl gave a program about the cemetery.
