Third grade students were presented dictionaries of their own by the McCook Area Rotary Club. Among the businesses helping provide the dictionaries are Lords Hardware, Burton Well Drilling, and Schaffert Manufacturing and Sales.

The Indianola American Legion and Auxiliary enjoyed December meeting and dinner . Entertainment after the delicious supper was the Saggy Bottom Boys of Wilsonville with Russ Ankersen on bass, Dan Cook of Wilsonville on the banjo, and Lonnie Weyeneth of Danbury-Marion with his harmonica.

Mayor Clifton Lord recently visited the fifth grade classroom at Republican Valley School to present Megan Conway with her certificate, a check, as a winner in the NMPP Energy Calendar Contest. This year’s theme was “My Energy Career”. Megan’s drawing features her farming and using energy to do it. Twelve drawings will be featured for one month of the calendar, and twelve more are placed on the cover.

Nine-year-old Tiffany Quaduor has had long hair as long as she can remember. But she has been getting headaches and was ready for a change. Thursday evening, Marlene Mustion at the Hairbender was chosen to cut her hair to be donated to Locks of Love. Tiffany came in with hair to her waist and left with shoulder length hair and a 13- inch braid to be sent to a child undergoing medical treatment for a ‘real hair’ wig.

Any decision on the Republican Valley School building was delayed by a vote of the school board Dec. 9 th . They chose to delay the decision until the Nebraska legislature solves the tax crisis facing the state. More than 80 people attended the meeting about options facing the school. Being considered are building a new 7-12 facility at the present high school site, building a new 7-12 facility at the elementary school site, or merging with either McCook or Cambridge.

Judeen Cornelsen is joining her mother, Judy Keith at Gals and Guys Beauty Salon. Judy graduated from RV High School in 1990, attended the McCook Beauty Academy and received her license on Dec. 7. She plans to work part time in the shop while attending college to become an elementary school teacher.

A group of Mrs. Alfred Cotton’s students meet on Mondays to learn the art of oil painting. Attending a recent class were Ruth Monter of Holbrook, Marian Moore, Bonnie Teter, of Bartley, and Eleanor Nott of Arapahoe. Mrs. Cotton has been teaching these ladies for the past four years.

Many of the older persons in the Wilsonville community as well as some of those who have had recent illnesses, or are handicapped, had callers Friday evening and Saturday as the Christian Church women distributed Christmas plates. Those who took time to stay and visit were richly blessed as well as the recipient of the plate. Calling on others almost seems to be one of those lost traits just as other old fashioned customs.

No one came up with the right ticket number last Wednesday evening at the first Indianola Christmas drawing, so some lucky person may win $50 this Wednesday night. Wayne Waddell won the $15, Jerry Hedges the $10 and Joey Baumbach won the turkey, with Mrs. Lyle Bergin winning the ham. Santa Claus will be in town the 22 nd to pass out goodies after the drawing so come to Indianola shop and save and maybe you’ll be a lucky winner. The Wilsonville Junior Youth Fellowship met Sunday evening with 16 young people who enjoyed a cookie baking and decorating party. After a sack lunch supper, the young people took the plates of cookies and sang Christmas carols to the senior citizens in 17 homes around town.

Bow and arrow deer hunters continue their amazing 1961 success story. They checked in 15 more deer in recent days, bringing to 245 the number taken this season. With three weeks to go, they are far over the record 223 reported to the Game Commission in 1959.

Scouts and Explorers of the six county area of the Temahawk District, will conduct a two-day Polar Bear Camp for members of the 20 Troops and Explorer units in the District. Camp will be held Dec. 29-30 at Rock Falls, located west of Atlanta, NE. Program events include winter sports, games, instruction on outdoor winter camping skills and evening campfires.
