Unemployment in Nebraska totaled 14,788 people who were able to work and looking for jobs. Coasting has bee the chief amusement of children and adults as well. The hill on Ogden Avenue was policed so as to avoid accidents from collisions with cars.

Ralph White was admitted to the Oxford Hospital after a corn picker accident where he lost part of his arm.

Grant Morgan, Orleans went to Washington D.C. to protest the expenditures of 2 million dollars for a proposed bridge across the lake to be formed by the Harlan County Dam.

December 29, 1961

Kenneth Johnson was the lucky winner of the first prize, a bedroom suite, in the Chamber of Commerce Christmas drawing. Second prize a radio and record player was won by Clifford Philby and third prize, a stainless steel tableware by Marilyn Benjamin.

Dean Salyers and Stanton Bloom had themselves a “Buffalo Hunt” at the Salyers home. They recently purchased two yearling bull buffaloes at Kimball. Both of them broke out of the pen and were running loose on the farm.

Oxford was one of only eight towns in southwest Nebraska to register a gain in population during the past ten years. The census bureau gives Oxford a total of 1,116 persons, compared to the old figure of

Mrs. Harold Blincow, local manager of H & R Block, moved the business to the new location at 502 Ewing St.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Rybczynski are the new managers of the Oxford Lanes.

The temperature on Dec. 31 hit a high of 65 degrees. People could be seen playing golf, running around in shirt sleeves and watering the lawns.

Nialie Liston and Aaron Blue, both of Oxford were the winners in the Oxford Chamber of Commerce’s two $50 savings bonds.

Furnas County Deputy Sheriff Larry Noel completed the Basic Training Course at Nebraska Law Enforcement Center in Grand Island.

Ronald Budgick, Oxford, braved the near zero degree weather to find and kill a 10-point buck southeast of Oxford on the Leroy Johnson property.

Winners of the 2010 Oxford Chamber of Commerce home Christmas lighting contest were first place, the Steve and Shelly Broeker home. The won Chamber Bucks certificates worth $200. Second place was won by Lowell and Sharon Harm, they won Chamber Bucks worth $100. Third place winner was the Darren and Charity Parks home. They won Chamber Bucks worth $50.

New Motel owners Larry and Opal Palmer were relaxing in their new home the Country Side Inn, the day before Christmas Friday afternoon, Dec. 24, in northeast Oxford. The couple purchased the 10-unit motel in October and since have been busy remodeling, giving it a deep cleaning and have purchased new mattresses for all the rooms.

The Duckwall’s Variety store in Oxford will close Sunday, Jan. 9, due to a corporate decision by Duckwall Stores Inc. to close all Duckwall stores as the majority of these stores were not showing a profit. The Oxford Economic Development committee have been in contact with other suppliers of small variety stores and there is a definite interest from them to work with the Oxford store.
