Southwest falls to Medicine Valley, Maywood
The Southwest Girls’ Roughriders Basketball team started the season with two losses against Medicine Valley, 63-48, on Thursday, Dec. 3, and Maywood/Hayes Center, 53-36, on Saturday, Dec. 5.
Against the Raiders of Medicine Valley, Southwest was outscored 31-27 in the first half and 32-21 in the second for the eventual 63-48 loss.
Sophomore Caylin Barnett led the Roughriders with 16 points. Sophomores Bailey Truksa and Brooklyn Clements sunk two 3-pointers each; Clements followed Barnett with 11 total points. At the line, Barnett went 10-of-14 in foul shots, as overall the team shot 16-of-23 at the line, 4-of-17 in 3-pointers and ID-of-36 inside.
Barnett also led the team with 14 total rebounds including four offensive and 10 defensive. She passed out one assist and grabbed one steal. Truksa handed out five assists and matched Clements again with four steals each. Barnett blocked all three of the teams total blocks.
Saturday, against the Wolves, Barnett again led the team with 17 points, followed closed by Truksa with 14. From the outside, Truksa and Clements each went 1-of-3 to lead the team.
Barnett again took a stance at the line, going 9-of-11. Truksa sunk her one opportunity from the free line. Overall the team went io-of-30 inside and 2-of-7 from the three-point line.
Barnett was again the leading rebounder, earning a second double-double in two games, with 14 defensive rebounds. She also handed out three assists and grabbed two steals.
The next competition will be at the Cattle Trail Invite hosted at McCook Community College and McCook High School. The girls’ first game is slated for 3:3o p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 against Decatur Community Schools at McCook Community College.
