Bulls, Eagles send 15 wrestlers onto District D-3 Final
GREELEY - Eight wrestlers from Southern Valley and seven more from Hi-Line took top four medals at the Class D Subdistrict 3A Tournament Friday at Central Valley High School. Each of them will return to the same gym for next Saturday's District D-3 Final, where they'll compete for the next goal - reaching the Class D State Tournament in Omaha.
The Nebraska School Activities Association debuted a new postseason model this year that included district-qualifying tournaments or subdistricts. Each district was divided into two subdistricts. Wrestlers who finished in the top four of their weight class at the Subdistrict Tournament would qualify for the District Championship Tournament. The format for qualifying for the State Meet is the same as year past - finish in the top four of your weight class at districts.
Southern Valley's Trevor Brown (152) led the Eagles to a fourth-place finish at the Subdistrict Tournament by taking first place in his weight class, pinning opponents in both the semifinals and the championship match. Cole Broeker (132) and Bryson Warner (195) each finished second, Braxton Hammond (106) was third and Mason Noel (145), Shane Sleja (160), Carson Grossnicklaus (170) and Gabe Grove (220) each took fourth in their respective weight classes.
Hi-Line finished right behind Southern Valley in the team standings and had a pair of individual champions in 170-pound Conner Schutz, who remained unbeaten at 26-0, and 220-pound Syrus Snow, who moved to 21-12 on the season. Jayden Kohl (160) and Evan Niemeier (285) each finished third and Aiden Shutts, Ben Tiede (182) and Carson Reiners all finished fourth.
