CAROLYN S. BORLAND
Carolyn Sue Borland of Cambridge, Nebraska passed away June 18, 2026 with family by her side. Born October 7, 1944 to Barthold and Velma (Butterbaugh) Hofferber in Geneva, Nebraska. She was the younger sister to James Alan Hofferber. Carolyn and James were raised on their family farm in rural Filmore County, Nebraska. Carolyn attended Rural District #3 in Filmore County, Nebraska and then went on to graduate from Geneva High School in 1962. Carolyn attended the University of Nebraska where she studied Home Economics and received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1966.
Carolyn took her first teaching job in Wymore, NE where she met Larry Dean Borland. Carolyn and Larry were married on August 3, 1968 at the United Methodist Church in Geneva, Nebraska.
From this marriage, four sons were born. Christopher Alan married to Cynthia Borland of Cambridge, NE. Brian Scott married to Kristine Borland of Olathe, KS. Gregory Todd married to Bobbie Borland of McCook, NE. and Bradley James married to Rebecca Borland of Omaha, NE.
Carolyn dedicated her professional life to education.
During her teaching career of 41 years, she taught Home Economics and Psychology at Wymore Public Schools, Beaver Valley Public Schools, and Cambridge Public Schools, where she remained until her retirement in 2007.
Carolyn was especially proud of her work helping to establish the Cambridge High School FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) chapter, serving as a foundational leader in its creation, growth, and continued success. Through her passion for teaching, mentorship, and commitment to student development, she helped countless young people gain practical life skills, confidence, and leadership abilities that would serve them well beyond the classroom.
Faith was a cornerstone of Carolyn’s life as a devoted member of the Cambridge Trinity United Methodist Church. Throughout the years, she shared her gifts and servant’s heart in countless ways, including singing in the choir, serving as church organist, participating in United Methodist Women, Lois Circle, attending Bible studies, and volunteering wherever help was needed. Carolyn’s unwavering dedication to her church family reflected her deep faith and commitment to serving others. Her love for the Cambridge Trinity United Methodist Church remained a constant throughout her life and continued until her passing.
Socially, Carolyn was active in the Alpha Omicron Society, Monday Musical, Quilting Guild, Bridge Club, and Shirley K’s Coffee Club.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Velma and Barthold Hofferber, her brother, James Hofferber, and husband Larry Borland.
Survivors included sistersin- law Rosemary Hofferber, Jean Borland and Helen Bailey; sons: Christopher Borland, Brian Borland, Gregory Borland, and Bradley Borland; grandchildren: Gavin Borland, Tyler Borland, Alex Borland, Kayla Perrigan, Kyle Borland, Alyssa Borland, Evelyn Borland, and Jackson Borland; great-grandchildren, Gage Borland and Liam Borland.
Visitation was held on Tuesday afternoon, June 23, 2026 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge.
Funeral Services were held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2026 at Trinity Community Church in Cambridge with Pastor Tim Burke officiating. Burial in the Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge will follow services.
