EVELYN (ZYSSET) WOLF
Evelyn (Zysset) Wolf, known to some family members as Dilly, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, after a long illness, at the age of 90.
She was born on January 4, 1933, at the Frontier County Nebraska farm of Carl and Aurie (Buker) Zysset. As the oldest of eight children, Evelyn milked cows, shucked corn, plucked chickens, and helped raise her siblings and care for the family farm.
During high school she was an excellent student, dorm counselor, and homecoming queen.
She graduated from high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, NE in 1951. She taught in rural Nebraska schools for two years, and then worked at the Elgin Watch factory and was a bookkeeper in Lincoln, NE for several years.
Evelyn was married to Dale Duane Wolf in Orafino, NE on November 28, 1952. Evelyn worked to support Dale through graduate school while caring for their four children. She was a Sunday school teacher, brownie and cub scout leader, band mother, and athletic booster. While living in Blacksburg, VA she had several part time jobs and retired in 1994 after gaining tenure as a bookkeeper for the Horticulture Department of Virginia Tech. Then she could dote on her eleven grandchildren.
Evelyn was a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon and Elder.
She was active in bible study, prayer groups, Women-of-the-Church, and was a recipient of a Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership. She devoted her life to community service and helping others. For twenty-one years after retirement, Evelyn and Dale spent summers on the Frontier County Nebraska family farm, and winters in Blacksburg.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Kenneth Zysset, Mervin Zysset, and Paul Zysset; and sisters, Ruth Crum and Janice Quinn.
She is survived by sisters, Bonnie Herrick and Lorene Raburn. She is also survived by son, David Wolf and wife, Pat, of Roanoke, VA (children, Adam Wolf and Isaac Wolf); by son, Eric Wolf and wife, Tammie Sarver, of Floyd, VA (children, Sarah Wolf, Emily Grace Sarver-Wolf, Elias Sarver-Wolf, Jeremiah Sarver-Wolf and Eva Rose Sarver-Wolf); by daughter, Laurie Wolf of Roanoke, VA; (son, Will Hunter); and by son, Allan Wolf and wife, Ginger West, of Asheville, NC (children, Simon Mitchell- Wolf, Ethan Wolf, and Jameson Wolf).
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, 701 Church St., SE, Blacksburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, find something nice to say about someone who annoys you. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.Oakeys.com.
