Kathyrn Joan Schumacher, age 81, recently of Denver, Colorado, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Kathy was born in McCook, Nebraska, to Howard Jerald “Bud” and Helen F. (Phares) Nelson on January 3, 1944.

She was raised on the family farm east of Curtis, Nebraska, where the satisfaction of hard work was not denied her because she was a girl.

She received her elementary education at a small country school and graduated from high school at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis in 1961. She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. Kathy then completed a dietetics internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She began her career as a dietician nutritionist at West Nebraska General Hospital in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

It was in Scottsbluff that Kathy met her husband, Ronald L. Schumacher. They were married at the United Methodist Church in Curtis on May 10, 1969. They lived in Scottsbluff for several years before moving to Colorado where Kathy was employed at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado. It was there that their sons Thomas Jefferson Schumacher and Benjamin Franklin Schumacher were born.

Ron began his college education while they were in Scottsbluff, and soon after the move to Colorado, they established Schumacher Accounting and Tax Service in Denver. Kathy kept her dietician’s license current, but she sidelined her career early on and put her effort into raising her boys and working with Ron to launch their business.

The debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s forced Kathy’s retirement from the accounting business in 2016, and soon after Ron’s retirement in 2020 they moved into a facility that allowed Ron the freedom of assisted living while Kathy was in a memory care unit.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Ron; sons, Tom (Tori) Schumacher of Broomfi eld and Ben (Allison) of Denver; stepson, Alan Dale Webb of Salina, KS; grandchildren, Jack, Surrey, Otto, and Freya Schumacher; step-grandchildren, Kyler Webb, Dane Olsen, Jordan (Austin) Garza, Kyl (Kayla) Olsen; sisters, Jean Smith of Curtis, NE, Gail (Stuart) Geis of York, NE, Bonnie (Todd) Rothleutner of Kilgore, NE, and brother Rex (Sonnie) Nelson of Nebraska City, NE; brothers-in-law, Don (Rose) of Scottsbluff, NE, Max (Suzie) of Eugene, OR, and Sam (Pat) Schumacher of Cheyenne, WY, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.

Terramation was chosen and a memorial will be held at an unscheduled date in the future.
