VERDA L. COVEY
A Memorial Graveside Service for Verda L. Covey will be held on Friday, October 15, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Nebraska with Mr. Jon Barnes officiating.
Verda Lillian Covey, 99 years of age, of Stamford, Nebraska formerly of Oxford, passed away, on October 9, 2021, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Verda was born on the family farm near Bloomington, Nebraska on February 18, 1922, the third of four children, born to Earl and Lillian (Hager) Reynolds. She received her education from Bloomington Public School in Bloomington, Nebraska and graduated from Bloomington High School with the class of 1939.
Following her education, Verda worked at the courthouse in Franklin, Nebraska.
On September 20, 1947, Verda was united in marriage to Marvin Lee Covey in Franklin and to this union five children were born: Marva Jo, Susan Kay, Dorothy Lee, Kathleen Rhea, and Michael Robert. The couple made their home in Oxford. While their kids were young, Verda was a homemaker, but as time went on, she worked at Better Buys, the Oxford Café, and then Becton-Dickinson until her retirement.
Verda enjoyed watching the birds outside her window and crocheting. She made beautiful quilts and over time everyone in the family received one. She spent many hours sewing the kids’ clothes while they grew up. Verda was a wonderful cook and made delicious bread and cinnamon rolls. She made sure to teach all her kids how to make her homemade noodles.
She was a member of the Methodist Church in Bloomington, the Extension Club, and the VFW Auxiliary in Oxford. She was a girl scout leader.
Besides her husband and parents, Verda was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Amber Renee Covey; twin great-granddaughters, Katie and Courtney Skiles; two sons-in-law: John Kesler; and Larry Wilbur; two brothers: Walter Reynolds as a young boy; and Franklin Reynolds and his wife, Ruth; father and mother-in-law, Jesse and Lola Covey; sister-in-law, Virginia Kirts; two brothers-in-law, Charles Dunn; and Robert Covey and his wife Naomi.
Verda is survived by, her five children: Jo Covey of Stamford, Sue Keslar of Oxford, Dot Wilbur of Holdrege, Kathy Barnes and her husband, Darrell of Newman Grove, Nebraska, and Michael Covey and his wife, Kim of Holdrege; 15 grandchildren: 46 great-grandchildren: 5 great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; one sister, Dorothy Dunn; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial book signing will be held on Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford.
A memorial has been established in Verda’s honor, and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
