Hi-Line boys drop contests to Bertrand, at SEM

SUMNER - The Hi-Line boys basketball team battled through a trio of games last week, but came up short in each as it saw its record fall to 0-7 this young season.

The Bulls struggled in the middle quarters of a 64-43

loss to Bertrand on Tuesday, then were overwhelmed early in a first round matchup at

the Sumner-EddyvilleMiller Tournament Friday against the Mustangs. Saturday, Hi-Line battled until the end, but its rally fell short in a nine-point defeat to Sandhills/Thedford.

Against Bertrand, the Bulls were right with the Vikings after eight minutes, trailing 12- 11 after one. But Bertrand blew the game open in the middle quarters. The Vikings outscored the Bulls 25-13 in the second to take a 37-24 lead to half, then grabbed firm control with a 20-point third quarter, building a 57-31 lead through three.

Hi-Line controlled the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as Bertrand took a 21-point victory.

The Bulls had a balanced attack in scoring, but they shot just 3o percent from the field and no one scored more than seven points.

Colton Stubbs and Nate Hodge each scored seven and Isaiah Bullis, Ryker Evans and Cade Schmidt each scored , Ian Corder added five.

Schmidt grabbed a teamhigh seven boards and Corder collected six to go with three assists. Hodge and Schmidt each had two assists and Schmidt had two steals.

Friday, SEM jumped all over the Bulls, racing out to a 30-8 lead after a quarter and the Mustangs coasted from there, winning by their 22-point first quarter margin.

SEM led 44-17 at the half, but the Bulls’ offense came

to life in the second half as Hi-Line put up 17 points in the third and 21 in the fourth for a 38-point half.

Evans and Schmidt each scored 15 to lead Hi-Line, while Treyton Evans and Corder each added six. Hodge scored five.

Ryker Evans pulled down nine rebounds and Schmidt had eight. Corder had two assists and two steals.

Saturday, it was slow starts to each half that cost the Bulls in a 61-52 defeat to Sandhills/Thedford.

Hi-Line fell in a 15-6 hole after a quarter, but bounced back with 19 point in the second to draw within 27-25 at the break.

But the Knights dominated the third, tallying 19 in the period to build a 46-32 lead through three.

After just seven points in the third, the Bulls heated up in the fourth, scoring 20, but it wasn’t enough as the Knights held the lead and won the game by nine.

Ryker Evans and Corder each scored 11 to lead the Bulls while Hodge and Schmidt each chipped in nine.

Hi-Line was blasted on the glass, outrebounded 44-18. Hodge grabbed four rebounds and Corder and Schmidt each had three boards. Stubbs had five steals and Hodge had four to go with three assists. Stubbs and Corder each had two assists.
