Southwest dominates triangular, second at Osceola
Southwest dominated a home triangular against Elm Creek and Overton on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The Roughriders defeated Elm Creek 54-27 and Overton 78-6. Elm Creek earned a 28-18 victor over Overton in the triangular.
Several matches were determined via forfeit as the opposing team did not have a wrestler to fill a weight class.
In the match against Elm Creek, Jacob Kerns, 132, and Garrett Latimer, 138, earned pins for the Roughriders in times of 1 minute, 36 seconds and 3:03, respective.
Carter VanPelt and Matt VanPelt were unable to contribute to the wins against Elm Creek, falling via pin and points, respectively.
Against Overton, Carter VanPelt, Kerns, Latimer, Bretty Tryon, 170, and Bryson Shoemaker, heavyweight, earned pins toward the 78-6 victory. Latimer’s was the quickest in 3o seconds.
The competition proved tougher against Bellville Re public County on Friday Dec. 11, where the Roughriders were outscored 38-36.
Carter VanPelt, Kerns and Matt Van Pelt all marked pins in the lost with times of 3:04, 1:27 and 56 seconds, respectively. Latimer earned a 4-0 decisions and Cole Downey, 195, earned a 9-5 decision.
Clayton Hardy, 220, fell with a pin in 3:26; Tryon lost in a decision, 1.-o; Tyler Ellis, 145, was pinned in 47 seconds; Gavin Hammond, 126, got stuck in 45 seconds; and Mitchel Stritt, 113, lost in a technical fall 15-0.
Southwest ended the week as the second-place team at the Osceola Invitational with 140. Fillmore Central won the Invite with 165.5 points.
Matt VanPelt led the Roughriders with his firstplace finish at the 152-weight class. Matt VanPelt recorded three pins on the way toward his championship. He clocked pins at 3:21, 2:28 and 1:02, respectively through the bracket.
Two wrestlers finished just short of the champion title earning second-places in their respective classes. Downey was second at 182 and Hardy was second at 220.
Downey earned four pins with times of 27 seconds, 1:16, 1:52 and 2:46. He fell once to Brett Bridger of Fullerton, 4-0. Hardy marked three pins in 4:40, 3:o5 and 59 seconds and was stuck by Chet Wichmann of Palmer in 4:29.
Carter VanPelt, Latimer and Shoemaker all finished third in their weight divisions. Ellis, Stritt and Tryon were fourth with Luis Escobar, 195, coming in fifth and Hammond coming in sixth.
The team’s next matchup is slated for Saturday, Dec. 19 at Cambridge as the final game of the 2020 season.
