Southwest splits with Alma, Arapahoe

The Roughriders Girls’ Basketball team went 1-1 last week, falling to Alma, 61-41, Tuesday, Dec. 15, and defeating Arapahoe, 34-30, on Friday.

Against Alma, the Cardinals started early with a 16-8 lead after the first quarter. They extended the lead in the following quarters, 26-17 at half, 46-31 at the third for the eventual 61-41 final score.

Sophomore Caylin Barnett was on a hot streak, leading for more than 5o percent of the team’s points, with 22 total. Sophomore Bailey Truksa sunk seven; senior Haylee Adams added six with sophomores Brooklyn Clements and Kiana Martin contributing four and two, respectively.

Truksa added one 3-pointer, for the only deep shot of the team’s six attempts.

Barnett went to the line seven times and only missed one free shot. Adams was 2-of-8 at the line. Overall the team was 8-of-15 at the free line.

Truska also dished out four assists to lead the team.

Defensively, Barnett grabbed nine total rebounds — seven defensive and two offensive. Adams and Martin each grabbed five rebounds, both grabbed three defensively. Overall the team grabbed 10 offensive and 16 defensive rebounds for 26 total. Adams grabbed four of the team’s nine steals. Martin blocked two shots.

Friday against the Warriors, the game stayed close with each team contributing four points in the first quarter. Arapahoe pulled ahead in the second outscoring the Roughriders 13-10. Southwest evened things back out in the third by outscoring 8-5 to tie things at 22. In the exciting final quarter, Southwest managed to gain the 12-8 advantage for the 34-30 victory.

Barnett continued the trend and scored 19 of the team’s 34 points. Freshman Bryn Lampe followed with nine and Clements, junior Jazmine Walz and Adams scored two each.

The team attempted six 3-pointers and sunk two — one each from Lampe and Barnett.

Barnett earned 12 of her 19 points at the free line, going 12-of-14.

Lampe, Clements and Barnett each dished out two assists. Barnett grabbed six steals with Clements stealing three and Lampe two. Walz grabbed one for the team’s 12 total.

Barnett grabbed 10 defensive and five offensive rebounds to lead the team in both categories.

Martin grabbed five total with Lampe snagging three, Walz two and Adams one.

Clements , Barnett and Martin each blocked one shot.

The Roughriders final game of the 2020 season will be at Southern Valley on Dec. 22. The 2021 season will open at Hi-Line on Saturday, Jan. 2.
