County Seat Battle

Body
In many counties there was a bitter contest on where the county seat should be located. I remember my grandfather (John Davis) relating how in Harlan County the court house was to be built at Orleans, Nebraska. However, the residents of Alma desired that the county seat should be build there. According to my grandfather, a group of men came from Alma and built a large bonfire. Residents of Orleans rushed to see what was happening. That’s when the official papers for the county seat were stolen and taken to Alma.
