The Department of Education’s proposed Health Education Standards have served as a catalyst for rigorous debate since they were first introduced in March. For the second month in a row, hundreds of people attended the regular State Board of Education meeting. Over 300 people attended the May 7 meeting in Kearney with approximately 75 individuals speaking in opposition to and 18 testifying in support of the proposed standards. According to Dist. 7 board member, Robin Stevens of Gothenburg, most people contacting him are in opposition to the proposed standards on the grounds that the content is age inappropriate.
