124 descendants of Robert and Velma (Osborn) Shafer gathered to celebrate 52 years of shindigging! After two years of smaller reunions in separate locations due to flooding in 2019 and the pandemic in 2020, The 52 Annual Shafer Shindig came to pass July 25 – Aug. 1, 2021 at Methodist Cove, Harlan County Lake.

The Southern Valley board of education heard a presentation from Apptegy during their regular meeting on Monday, August 9, 2021. This is a website hosting service that includes an app for the school. Superintendent Bryce Jorgenson said this can help the school put out a positive image and go away from twitter and facebook a little bit. The board was shown the app and its abilities and the website designs. There was a lot of good feedback and some questions about ease of use with what they are already doing and have already done. The app has a live feed that looks much like facebook, but without the ability to comment or share. It also keeps schedules and menus that are easy to get to as well as announcements that people can set up notifications for. This could take the place of remind. The service will cost $6,000 per year; they currently pay about $2500. Jorgenson feels that value this adds is worth it, but it is not the right time. They could look at this more after Christmas. He also wants to talk with Jared, the school tech advisor.

BARTLEY - Following a trio of hearings to receive public comment on different policies, the Southwest Board of Education held a brief meeting Monday to approve those policies as well as to discuss proposed health standards from the Nebraska Department of Education, ESSERS III grant allocations and the Return to School Plan.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) received additional COVID vaccine from the state to meet the demand from their partners and individuals wanting to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccination rates across the health district have reached 42%. This number includes fully vaccinated as well as partially vaccinated individuals.

The neighborhood just can’t get moisture. There have been some showers nearby, but they have been quite spotted. Tuesday morning found nineteen hundredths in the rain gauge. Monday morning found the neighborhood corn fields still looking pretty fair, but Sunday’s and Monday’s temps are sure to be taking their toll. Jean Witte age 91 of Cambridge passed away at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Sunday August 9, 2021. Visitation for Jean was held on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 from 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM with family present to greet friends.

Verna Raye Horton, age 81, of Arapahoe, Nebraska passed away on August 4, 2021 at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe, Nebraska. She was a born on the farm near Arapahoe to Eli and Ethel Elizabeth (Scott) Brown. She also had a twin sister born that day, Vera Faye Brown. Verna attended grade school in a one room school house. She then attended high school at Arapahoe High School graduating with the class of 1957. She married Clifford Houser on November 24, 1957 and they would later divorce, but to this union were born 7 children. Cliff (J.R.), Michael Dean (Mike), Marjorie Anne, Douglas Allen, Angie Elizabeth, Terry Andrew. While raising her family, she would often be found outside helping with the farm and ranch. When her children were grown enough to help they would help with the day to day chores.

Wilma Ina Haussermann, age 94, of Arapahoe, Nebraska passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2021, after being in Phelps Memorial Hospital, Holdrege, Nebraska from congestive heart failure and her body just wore out. Wilma was born near Alma, Nebraska on a farm on June 8, 1927, as the third of thirteen children of Friend Valentine (Mike) and Augusta Louise Rebman Hadley.
