The Nebraska State Patrol continues to investigate a fatality crash that occurred on Highway 283 during response to the large fire southeast of Elwood. The crash occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m., when a Ford Expedition, driven by Phelps County Emergency Manager Justin Norris, with passenger Darren Krull, Chief of the Elwood Volunteer Fire Department, was struck head on by a truck hauling water, approximately eight miles north of Arapahoe on Highway 283.

Brockman Receives Grand Champion Intermediate Speaker

The Phelps-Gosper 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held on March 24 at the Phelps County Ag Center. Becky Schwartz served as the judge. Kara Brockman received Grand Champion Intermediate Speaker and Brooke Brockman received Grand Champion 4-H PSA. Kara and Brooke will represent Phelps-Gosper 4-H at the Nebraska State Speech contest on June 24 in Lincoln. Kara and Brooke attend Elwood Public School. The Gosper County Senior Center is in full swing and has coffee drinkers in at 8:30, pool-players in the midmorning, exercise machines that are in motion, a puzzle on the table, domino game to get started after lunch and of course great noon dinners for you to enjoy with friendly neighbors. The staff will continue to make your visit here, either while participating in the activities or eating our noon meal, as positive and enjoyable as can be. Thanks for your support.

Extension Mad Science Session

The Arapahoe Library and 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator, Elena Stout have collaborated hosting Mad Science sessions after school in March. Last week the lesson was on the Circulatory System. Participants investigated a real beef heart and built their own pumping heart models. (Above) Cody Einspahr examines the heart of the cow as Mrs. Elena Stout points out that the heart is covered in a layer of fat to protect it.

First Place at Nebraska National History Day

Arapahoe student, Lael Rathbun, earned first place at the Nebraska National History Day contest in Lincoln on Saturday, April 9. His exhibit board, entitled "The Versailles Treaty: A Treaty that Ended and Started a War", will advance to the national contest this June in Washington, D.C. Lael completed his project under the direction of World History teacher Marcia Foley.
