Public Safety

Body
Every American deserves to feel safe in their community. Yet over the last few years, violent crime has spiked across the country. Defunding the police or taking resources away from our men and women in blue is never the answer. Instead, we must provide law enforcement with the support and tools they need to carry out their duties.

Health promotion and personal safety

Body
The annual wellness exam is one of my favorite things to do as a doctor. It’s a chance to talk about one of my passions: health promotion. As most patients expect, our health promotion discussion includes smoking cessation, diet, and exercise. Perhaps more surprising is our conversation regarding personal safety. We talk about sunscreen, seatbelts, helmets, distracted driving or driving under the influence. And I ask if their guns are locked up.

Growing Nebraska by Developing Our People

Body
We’re successfully growing Nebraska and creating jobs here in the Good Life. Nebraska had the nation’s lowest average unemployment rate in 2020 and 2021, and we do again so far in 2022. In fact, we currently have the lowest unemployment rate in state history at 1.9%. As of Sunday, August 14th, the State’s job website (NEworks. nebraska.gov) listed 51,835 available openings. This abundance of jobs benefits Nebraska’s families. Earlier this month, the Annie E. Casey Foundation released their annual Kids Count Data Book with information on child welfare in all 50 states. Nebraska ranked #1 for children’s economic wellbeing. That makes sense. When there are plenty of jobs available, parents can readily find work to take care of their kids. While our state’s historically low unemployment rate is great for Nebraskans looking for their next career opportunity, it poses challenges for businesses and State agencies looking to hire great people. In this labor market, employers must be creative to recruit and retain the talent they need to grow.

Beaver City to Vote on Use of Sales Tax Funds

Body
BEAVER CITY – The Beaver City Council met on August 15, 2022, for their regular board meeting and covered several agenda items during their almost two-hour meeting. The council approved Resolution 2022-2 that will put a measure on the November ballot regarding the use of the one percent sales and use tax that currently is used for economic development. Drafted by City Attorney, Lisa Shifflet, the measure would allocate the funds for the City Infrastructure Program for Construction, Repair, Replacement, and /or Maintenance of Municipal and Equipment including the City Fire and Rescue Department. Funds that have previously been allotted for economic development would remain in that account to be utilized by business owners for low interest loans and matching grants.

Cambridge Council approves returning Kester Field to its original layout

Body
Cambridge City Council met in regular session on Monday, August 15, 2022. Derek Raburn was absent from the meeting. Council approved the Consent Agenda Items. John Kutnink said he didn’t have much to present about the ambulance, but he did notify Council they will have to declare the old ambulance surplus in the coming months. Council also approved the July and August Library meeting minutes as submitted. Council then discussed the Museum Board Meeting Minutes from the July meeting. Council member Vernita Saylor asked the Board members to submit their minutes with last names. The minutes were approved as submitted. Utilities Supervisor Dave Houghtelling reported the street lights in the cul-de-sac in Harvest Meadows have been installed. He also said the work ethic campers ran weed eaters while in town last week and got many things (Continued to Page 4) cleaned up in the park and in the cemetery. Houghtelling also said he would like to budget for street signs. They pulled the backup well that wasn’t working and sent a video of what was happening inside the well. The inside of the well looks okay, but there is a pile of gravel at the bottom. Not sure what’s going on yet, but he will have costs once Sargent looks at the video.
