Through a grant from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is working with local and state partners to assist with drug overdose prevention efforts.

ELWOOD - After opening their volleyball season with Southern Valley each year since the Hi-Line co-op formed, the Bulls had not been able to take down the Eagles, but they had been close, falling in five sets on multiple occassions. Last Thursday, the Bulls checked that accomplishment off the list. Hi-Line swept its way past Southern Valley 25-18, 25-15-25-17 to open the season with a victory for the first time.

Statistical information for Southwest was not available at press time. Cambridge had opened the season with seven-straight set victories, claiming a 25-17, 25-11, 25-16 win at Wallace on Thursday before sweeping Wauneta-Palisade 25-8, 25-20 and Red Cloud 25-14, 25-4 earlier Saturday morning.

BENKELMAN - The Cambridge boys and girls cross country teams each finished second place at the Dundy County-Stratton Invite last week, finishing with five individual medalists. In the girls’ race, Brenna Deterding led the Trojans with a runner-up finish while Kori Koeppen was fourth and Rachel Harris was seventh.

By Con Marshall A former Cambridge High School football standout, Bryce Flammang, now of Casper, Wyo., will be inducted into the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. The ceremonies will be on Saturday, October 15 following the Eagles’ football game against Adams State.

SOUTHERN VALLEY the Southern Valley football team fell behind in the first half and couldn’t escape the hole in a 52-16 loss to Sandhills Valley Friday night. The Eagles trailed just 14-8 after a quarter, but the Mavericks erupted for 30 points in the second to build a 44-16 lead at halftime.
