Elaine Marie (Wieser) Swanson, age 81, of Norwalk, Iowa, passed peacefully from this life on Monday, September 26, 2022 at Norwalk Nursing & Rehab Center, Norwalk, Iowa. Nellie J Ryan, age 86, of Indianola, NE passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at Community Hospital in McCook, NE. One of eight children, Nellie was born on June 24, 1936 in Bartley, NE to parents, Frank and Johanna (Schutte) Sughroue. She attended school in Indianola where she also graduated high school in 1954.

Offutt Air Force Base here in Nebraska plays a key role in our nation’s national security. Located in Sarpy County, the military base serves as the headquarters of U.S. Strategic Command, or STRATCOM. Offutt also hosts the 55th Wing, which conducts important global intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, and we are proud that they call Nebraska home. Since Offutt supports multiple military communities and their unique operations, the base’s infrastructure is constantly in use. That includes the Offutt runway, which was originally constructed in 1941. Over the following eight decades, the runway experienced significant wear and tear. As the quality of the runway continued to deteriorate, something had to be done to ensure Offutt could continue to support STRATCOM, the 55th Wing, and our national security. I am pleased to say that after many years of work, Offutt’s new runway was officially unveiled on Friday, September 30th. The event commemorating the occasion was great, and it was wonderful to see all the different individuals who contributed to this important undertaking.

Over the past three years, we’ve dealt with shortages of many goods, from lumber to cars to toilet paper. Supply chain shortages have shown that the United States is overreliant on foreign suppliers. Instead of depending on China for medicine, Taiwan for computer chips, or Russia for fertilizer, we need to return the manufacturing of our products to America.

In 2021, the Nebraska Legislature adopted LB 644, titled the Property Tax Request Act and more commonly dubbed the Truth in Taxation Act. The bill requires counties to inform their citizens of an increase in property tax from the year prior of 2.0% or more.

LEXINGTON - Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an Elwood woman following the discovery of an attempted murder plot. The investigation began last week when the Gosper County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a concerned citizen regarding suspicious comments made by an Elwood woman. The Gosper County Sheriff’s Office notified the Nebraska State Patrol.
