For centuries, the Medicine Creek watershed has been a utopia for man and animal kind. Wild game roamed the region, and flora flourished throughout the valley. Prehistoric humans coveted the watershed as a land of promise and life. Even Buffalo Bill treasured the Medicine Creek area, for it was one of his favorite hunting haunts. However, nothing lasts forever.

Frontier County Turtle Race

The 2023 Frontier County Turtle Race was a huge success again this year. 36 youngsters came out to race their turtles on Friday, July 28. A huge crowd assembled to cheer on the turtles and the kids! The turtles were raced according to the grade the handlers are going into this fall. The race, medals, and championship trophy were sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction. The medal winners for each of the divisions were as follows: Pre-K: Eliza Meyers; Kindergarten – 1st Grade: Daisy Mortensen; 2nd – 3rd Grade: Darin Meyers; 4th 5th Grade: Maddy Oberg; 6th – 8th Grade: Rileigh Crawford; 9th – 12th Grade: Chris Taylor. An overall championship race was held for all medal winning turtles. The 2023 Turtle Race Champion, beating all first place turtles, was raced by Eliza Meyers. The NCTA Heifer Link initiative was launched at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in January 2015 as an integral part of the Ownership Advantage Program. With Heifer Link’s introduction, students are given a unique chance to receive a bred heifer during their fourth semester.

{ OBITUARY } JERETTA L. TAURIELLA

Jeretta Lynn (Cass) Tauriella was born November 1, 1948 in Norton, Kansas to Dean and Mary (Warner) Cass. Jeretta was raised in Beaver City, Nebraska where she was the second of five children. She graduated from Beaver City High School in 1967 and went on to attend Kearney State College (currently the University of Nebraska in Kearney).

Evelyn (Zysset) Wolf, known to some family members as Dilly, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, after a long illness, at the age of 90. She was born on January 4, 1933, at the Frontier County Nebraska farm of Carl and Aurie (Buker) Zysset.
