Patricia Ann Guerrero (Donovan) 74 years old, passed away after a yearlong fight with cancer that she handled with grace and dignity on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at the Beaver City Manor, Beaver City, NE. Daughter of Paul Lucius Donovan and Shirley June Donovan, was born July 15th, 1951, in Leadville, CO where her father Paul worked in the Climax Mine. Pat is the first of five children Jeanette, Jim, Debbie and John. At a very young age she had undergone an experimental heart surgery and recovered exceptionally. Pat was also a caretaker for her younger siblings on the family farm while her parents worked the sugar beet fields in Hudson, CO until the kids were all old enough to help work the fields. She learned to cook meals and bake while overlooking her siblings and preparing meals for her family.

Area students took advantage of sunshine and planted trees in celebration of Arbor Day Friday. The fourth grade from the Arapahoe/Holbrook Schools met at the Arapahoe City Park to plant a Maple Autumn Blaze tree in celebration of Arbor Day.

State Patrol conducts alcohol sales compliance in Furnas County

Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol compliance checks at several businesses in Furnas County on Monday. Three of the ten businesses checked sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 70%, though each of the businesses checked the minor’s identification before sale.

Serving the communities in and around Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan and Red Willow Counties Several students from both Southern Valley and Southwest captured medals at the NSAA State Journalism competition this week. The Southwest Roughriders were well-represented at State Journalism with Shie King as State Champion in Editorial Cartooning while also receiving 7th place in Photo/Artistic Illustration.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) will be offering Vaccines for Children at public clinics in May. This is a great time to help your child get the vaccines they need for the upcoming school year. Anyone two months of age and older are invited to get their vaccinations.
