May, June dates set for annual tractor/equipment safety training for west central area

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– The Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health, in partnership with Nebraska Extension, has announced the dates for its annual tractor and equipment safety training courses. The training will be offered at various locations across Nebraska throughout May and June.

State Patrol conducts alcohol sales compliance in Furnas County

Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol compliance checks at several businesses in Furnas County on Monday. Three of the ten businesses checked sold alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 70%, though each of the businesses checked the minor’s identification before sale.

The Furnas County 4-H Shooting Sports competition was held on Saturday at the Izaak Walton south of Arapahoe. There were several kids taking part in BB gun, 22 and trap along with archery.

Students celebrate Arbor Day planting trees

Area students took advantage of sunshine and planted trees in celebration of Arbor Day Friday. The fourth grade from the Arapahoe/Holbrook Schools met at the Arapahoe City Park to plant a Maple Autumn Blaze tree in celebration of Arbor Day.

Southwest, Southern Valley students excel at State Journalism

Serving the communities in and around Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan and Red Willow Counties Several students from both Southern Valley and Southwest captured medals at the NSAA State Journalism competition this week. The Southwest Roughriders were well-represented at State Journalism with Shie King as State Champion in Editorial Cartooning while also receiving 7th place in Photo/Artistic Illustration.
Southwest’s Shie King, pictured above center, won State Gold in Editorial Cartooning. Olivia Minary (right) was State Runner-Up in Action Photography and Maddy Tryon took seventh in Feature Photography.
