Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) would like to encourage everyone to learn what to do to beat the heat in ’26. Last year in southwest Nebraska, July had the highest number of calls to emergency medical services during the summer.

Cambridge Unit 199 of the American Legion Auxiliary met in regular session at the Community Building on June 11. After Presentation of the Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer and Preamble, President Witte called the meeting to order at 2:03 p.m. Attending the meeting were: President Marlene Witte, Secretary Sondra Jonson, Chaplain Charla Mehaffie, Mary Lou Wineland, Jackie Morgan and Sue Witte. Minutes of the May meeting were read. Charla made motion to approve them. Mary Lou seconded. The minutes were approved.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) reminds everyone to protect themselves from West Nile Virus (WNV) by avoiding mosquito bites. Since 2012, more than 50 cases of WNV have been reported in southwest Nebraska. Nebraska continues to have one of the highest rates of West Nile Virus in the country. There is no vaccine for people and no special medicine to treat the virus.

The South Central Nebraska Softball League brings its annual season-end tournament to Cambridge this weekend. While first-round games will be played at higher seeds Friday evening, the quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place games and championship games for 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U as well as medal round games for 18U will be played on the two fields at McKinley Park, beginning at 8 a.m.

Teachers of Tomorrow (ToT), one of the nation’s largest teacher preparation programs, today announced the launch of Nebraska Teachers of Tomorrow, a new stateapproved alternative teacher preparation program designed to help more aspiring educators enter the classroom and support school districts across Nebraska with a stronger, more reliable teacher pipeline. The program is now accepting applications.

The South Central Nebraska Baseball League year-end tournament begins next week with first-round games beginning Monday. The regular season concludes Thursday.
