Cancer screening saved my life - twice!

Body
As a physician with 45 years of practice, I’ve seen my share of diseases. I have usually been on the physician side of the diagnosis-treatment paradigm. However, knowing the rationale for diagnostic screening tests, I fortunately did not shirk my own.

Senate Internships

Body
Every fall, spring, and summer, my office provides some outstanding college students with the opportunity to intern in Washington, D.C. or at one of our state offices. These internships give students the chance to learn more about public policy, our system of government, and constituent service. This summer, I welcomed four interns to our D.C. team. These college students are all from Nebraska, and over the last 8 weeks they have done important work on behalf of the state. I am always delighted to welcome young people to our nation’s capital and am consistently impressed with the motivation and skills of our next generation of Nebraskans.

Letter to the Editor

Body
July 22, 2022 Letter to the Editor: Reducing the number of people who return to prison is a key goal of any criminal justice system. In Nebraska, more than 70% of those discharged in 2019 have not returned to the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) – a significant benchmark.

The student doctor; a complement to patient care

Body
As a clinical professor at my state’s medical school, I frequently have medical students seeing patients with me in clinic. While the majority of patients are happy to allow student involvement, some decline. This makes me wonder what misconceptions lead patients to be averse to trainees participating at their clinic visits or hospital bedsides. In my experience, the presence of learners has a positive influence on our work in the clinic and hospital.

Enhancing Awareness of PTSD

Body
Summertime. For most, this signals thoughts of warm weather and good times with family and friends Sadly, what brings happiness for some can trigger stress and sorrow for others. In the words of a Vietnam War veteran, “The fourth of July was once my favorite holiday with friends and family…but now it is a day I wish never existed.”

Continued Momentum for Cattle Market Reform

Body
If you’re familiar with the cattle industry, you are probably aware that cattle producers are receiving a falling share of the beef dollar. At the start of the pandemic demand for beef was through the roof, forcing consum ers to pay higher prices for steaks and other products. Many family ranchers understandably expected that to lead to a long-overdue profit increase for their operations.

Body
I am an early morning walker on the streets of Cambridge. A couple of weeks ago a large German Shepherd and a Yellow Lab attacked and bit me. This morning as I was walking on the street less than a half block from my home, a Pitbull and a large mixed breed dog chased me aggressively. I am attempting to eliminate these streets from my route, but it is difficult. Particularly when they are so near my home. I have always understood that it is illegal for dogs to be unleashed and running at large. I do not walk on sidewalks to stay further away from people’s property. These animals leave their owner’s yards. I would like to be able to safely walk in my own neighborhood. Please always keep your animals under your control. It is the only safe thing to do.
