October 12, 1995

Two escapees from the Norton Correctional Facility were captured at an Overton home and are being held in the Dawson County Jail in Lexington. During their escape, they stole a 1978 Ford LTD station wagon parked behind Kelley’s Super Market in Beaver City, but ran out of gas just across the tracks in Arapahoe, where they stole a pickup from a private residence. From there, authorities were able to determine where the two were headed. Jason Brown, former Wilsonville and Hendley

Jason Brown, former Wilsonville and Hendley resident and a 1989 graduate of Beaver City High School, was an extra for actor Jason London in the movie “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar”. It was filmed in the Lincoln area. Brown is the son of Harry and Jan Brown of Hendley.

Jim Giles of Wichita, KS was a Wednesday dinner guest of his father John Giles at the Senior Center.

Last week visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Lambert were Wilbur and Zola Thomas, Corrine Trowbridge and Dean Lambert.

Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kennis McClelland, Kaine and Annie Monday evening were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McClelland; Mrs. Kaylene Bell, Kyle, Karissa and Justin of Holdrege and Mr. and Mrs. Elton Bryant of Norton. The occasion was Ann McClelland’s 11th birthday.

The first Southern Valley Homecoming was held Friday. Royalty are Steve Harder and Lesha Korte, King and Queen; Bryce Wolzen and Mike Otte, Princes and Tiffany Quinn and Sarah Becker, Princesses; Josh Phillips and Melinda Lanham, Junior Attendants; Phillip Lueking and Lindsey Stineman, Sophomore Attendants; and Kale Shafer and Kim Sladky, Freshman Attendants.

October 8, 1970

Born - To Mr. and Mrs. Ron Rosenkoetter of Omaha, September 26, a son, Courtney Scott. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lamb. Mrs. Fannie Rennecker is the great-grandmother.

Married - Marsha Elizabeth Sebelius, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Sebelius of Alma, and Larry Dean Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Weaver of Stamford, August 29 at the United Methodist Church in Alma.

The City is offering a reward of $100 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for defacing the statue in the park.

Miss Meredith Kay Shafer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Shafer of Beaver City, was chosen to serve as a countess to the court of the 1970 Ak-Sar-Ben Coronation and Ball in Omaha October 23 and 24.

Marvin Goodman has replaced Charles Sundermeier, who resigned from teaching math and chemistry at Beaver City High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Wentling and Gayle attended a luncheon, convocation and reception at the University of Montana for for new students and parents in September. Enroute home, Mr.and Mrs. Wentling visited Yellowstone Park, Quake Lake and Glacier Park and called on Mr. and Mrs. Larry Cass in Ronan, Montana and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Parrish in Denver.

Hendley - A birthday party was held Saturday evening honoring the first birthday of Samantha Nitzel. Present were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fleming, Mrs. Ellen Powell and Roger of Beaver City, Mr. and Mrs Burton Skiles and Jason of Wilsonville and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Nitzel.

The Beaver City Electronics TV Shop was recently appointed as an authorized Packard-Bell dealer.

October 13, 1955

Born - To Mr. and Mrs. Dean Weaver at Norton, Wednesday, October 5, a son, Randy Lee.

Vandals had a field day at Hendley on Wednesday when they forced their way into three places to plunder and destroy personal property. The Farmers Elevator was entered sometime between Saturday evening and Monday morning with cash taken. The Herman Yeager and Lee Overholser homes were entered Sunday afternoon with personal property taken. Sheriff McTaggart is investigating.

Wendel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Cass, celebrated his birthday last Thursday when his mother invited his classmates and teacher for ice cream and cake. Guests were Tommy Martin, Phillip Babcock, Polly Jane Sawyer, Douglas Babcock, Tony Cass, Janice Rutherford, Kenneth Babcock, Roger Babcock, Janice Rutherford and Mrs. Polly Sawyer. Tommy, Phillip and Polly Jane were also supper guests and guests of Wendel at the show.

A farewell party was held Friday evening for Mr. and Mrs. Paul Laverack who moved from their farm to the Bob Eshelman home in town. The uninvited guest list included Mr. and Mrs. Ed Quinn of Edison, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kinsman, Anna Kinsman, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Hester, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Morse and Mary Lou, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Marshall and sons. After a pleasant evening, the guests served pie, sandwiches and coffee.

The Beaver City Bearcats operated like a smooth running machine Friday night and chalked up a 34-14 win over the Franklin Flyers.

October 11, 1945

Earl Bruening will open the Bruening Store in Hendley this Saturday, October 13. Located in the former Shafer Store, the store will feature a complete line of groceries, meats and vegetables. A hardware line will be added shortly. You can market your cream, eggs and poultry here.

The Beaver City Bearcats scored in all four periods last Thursday to trample Oxford 32 to 0. The Beaver City lads had a decided advantage in weight and speed.

Harry Martin killed a rattlesnake Saturday, which had eight rattles.

Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Quinn and Mrs. Janey Gilchriest were Mrs. Clarence Thalheim and her daughter-in-law Mrs. Verlyn Thalheim of Long Island, Kans. Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. C. Thalheim are daughters of Mrs. Gilchriest.

Holliinger School News - The grammar room pupils are enjoying the new cement steps and sidewalk that have been constructed the past two weekends.

Precept - Mr. and Mrs. Mose Thomas and Myrtle spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Taylor and Betty.

The Wilsonville High School football team won at Oxford, 12 to 0, Friday night.

October 9, 1930

Married - Miss Dora Stearns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Stearns of Hendley, and Clarence Loennig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Loennig of this city, Sunday evening, October 5 in Norton, Kans.

The residence of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Milligan in the Second Ward was burned to the ground with nearly all its contents at 3 o’clock Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Milligan were able to arouse the family and escape with what clothes they could gather up hurriedly. A piano and library table were also saved, but nothing else. Defective electrical wiring appears to be the cause.

The Beaver City High School football team won from the McCook High School last Friday at McCook 25 to 0.

The freshman class from Edison High School enjoyed a skating party Monday evening at Horton’s Park west of town.

Born - To Mr. and Mrs. Clark Beeler, Thursday, September 30, a son, Earl Manley.

S. R. McKelvie, the most discredited and openly criticized governor that Nebraska has ever known, came to Beaver City last Tuesday, addressing a meeting at the courthouse, trying to explain his extravagant and unpopular bill code. He also challenged statements made by the Times-Tribune and devoted some time in denouncing the paper.

The usual fall consignment of sheep for the feed yards of G. M. Warner, Leon Warner, Ralph Warner and H. A. Humrich arrived from Denver last Thursday and about 1,000 head have been apportioned to each of their three feeding stations.

Beaver City has outstripped her rival, Cambridge, and has taken her place as the largest city in Furnas County. Populations of incorporated cities in the county, according to the Bureau of Census, are: Arapahoe, 894; Beaver City, 1,103; Cambridge, 1,042; Edison, 315; Hendley, 200; Holbrook, 455; Oxford, 739; Wilsonville, 370.
