Cambridge disc golf course grows to meet tournament demands
Fundraising efforts ongoing for new equipment signage
CAMBRIDGE - The Cambridge disc golf course continues to grow and improve.
Years ago, Jim Tellus recognized a new sport that was going to grow in popularity when his son, Jason, took him to play disc golf in 2008. Jim was on the Park Board then and secured approval for six baskets. Sponsorships were sold and play began. In 2015 John & Valerie McLeod moved to Cambridge. John also enjoyed the sport and saw that it was well-liked. He got approval, sold six sponsorships and installed six more baskets, bringing the Cambridge course at McKinley Park to 12.
Now, during this year of Covid-19, Kearney and McCook removed baskets from their disc golf courses for a period, but the Cambridge course remained open. An avid player from Kearney, Mark Blinde, who said he has played every course in the State, came to Cambridge. He loved the course because it is within the confines of beautiful McKinley Park.
When there was talk of expansion in order to host tournaments, Blinde offered his help. He was directed to John McLeod and Mayor Dave Gunderson. Together and with some other players from Kearney, they have finalized locations for an exciting new course. McLeod has installed the new baskets, and it is ready to play.
Concrete launching pads and new signage are needed, and this 18-basket course will be tournament ready which has the potential to bring 45 - 70 players to town.
This very popular sport is played by all ages. One retired gentleman rides his Harley from McCook several times a week to play. Another eager player is a cute little three-year old boy. All ages can play alone, with a partner, or as part of a team.
Unfortunately Jim Tellus did not live to see the completion of this course, but his children are donating memorial funds to the expansion. If you wish to donate or sponsor a basket, please contact the City office at 722 Patterson or call (308) 697-3711.
