Thanks to some late game dramatics and a pair of double-digit wins, the Cambridge boys basketball team opened its season 3-0 after a 60-46 win over Southern Valley Tuesday.

The Trojans got a putback at the buzzer from Zach McArthur to force overtime at Hitchcock County Thursday night, then McArthur hit a game-winning layup for a 58- 57 win on opening night.

The two baskets accounted for four of McArthur’s six points in support of three players in double-fi gures, led by Derek Trompke’s 19 points and 18 from CJ Fiene. Dahlton Wood also had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Trompke had six steals for the Trojans, who trailed by as many as 14 in the second half. Carson Trompke had three steals and three assists. McArthur had three assists and Fiene had three steals.

Friday, the Trojans shut out Wauneta-Palisade 19-0 in the first quarter and rolled to a 51-35 win over the Broncos. Trompke scored 11, Wood added 10 and Carson Trompke scored nine. Will Taylor grabbed 11 rebounds and Wood had eight. McArthur had four assists and Carson and Derek Trompke each had two. Derek Trompke added three steals.

Tuesday, the Trojans played from in front, grabbing a lead before starting to pull away just before halftime.

Cambridge claimed a 35-19 lead at the break over Southern Valley with a 13-2 run just before halftime.

The Trojans then opened the third quarter with another outburst and built a 49-25 advantage through three before coasting to the finish in a 14-point victory.

Derek Trompke scored 15 to lead Cambridge while Kohan Grindle added nine on three threes. Wood also scored nine and grabbed 11 rebounds. Austin Harris had seven boards and McArthur dealt five assists. Trompke had four steals and Taylor snagged three.

Cambridge travels to South Loup on Friday, then hosts Loomis on Tuesday.
