Area students took advantage of sunshine and planted trees in celebration of Arbor Day Friday. The fourth grade from the Arapahoe/Holbrook Schools met at the Arapahoe City Park to plant a Maple Autumn Blaze tree in celebration of Arbor Day.

Serving the communities in and around Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan and Red Willow Counties Several students from both Southern Valley and Southwest captured medals at the NSAA State Journalism competition this week.

One Gosper County volunteer was among the many honored at the 2026 Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Awards. Seventeen adult volunteers, nine 4-H members, and five families of volunteers are being recognized with Awards.

The 2026 4-H Carnival was hosted by Silver Spurs and 4-H Workers 4-H Clubs on Saturday, April 18th at the Ella Missing Center in Arapahoe. The public was able to participate in games, earn prizes, jump in the bounce house, and enjoy cake, ice cream, and hot dogs.

The Furnas County 4-H Shooting Sports competition was held on Saturday at the Izaak Walton south of Arapahoe. There were several kids taking part in BB gun, 22 and trap along with archery.

25 Years Ago-April 26, 2001 John Windhusen represnted Beaver City at the Tree City Ceremony in Lincoln. Beaver City was named a Tree City ISA for the 12th consecutive year.

100 years ago-April 8, 1926 A bootleggers convention was evidently held in Alma last week. Arrests of men from Orleans, Alma, Smithfield, and other southern Nebraska towns were made and fines and jail sentences received.

10 years ago Brodie Besler repeated as state champion in the Nebraska Powerlifting Meet earlier this month. This year he was tagged “Lifter of the Meet”.

10 years ago The Arapahoe Public Library Foundation hosted an entertaining Dueling Pianos show at the Ella Missing Center. Holen farms catered the meal.
