ARAPAHOE – During th monthly meeting on December 13, 2021, the board held an executive session to discus teacher salaries for the 2022-2023 school year. Board members met with members of the Arapahoe Education Association (AEA) earlier this month to discuss negotiations.

Steven “Pete” Hamel, age 63 of Arapahoe, Nebraska passed away o Wednesday December 8 2021, at the Cambridge Hospital. He was born on August 20, 1958, to Hollis and Darlene (Elston) Hamel at Cambridge, Nebraska. Pete grew up on the family farm in the rural Cambridge area and attended Cambridge Public Schools where he graduated with the class of 1977. After graduating Pete attended Tech School in Hastings, NE and graduated with a degree in welding. While growing up, Pete, his brothers and sister rode, trained and showe horses throughout Southwest and Central Nebraska in 4-H, open and registered shows where he won many trophies and ribbons. The trip to the Nebraska State Fair was always a goal with the 4-H horses to compete in Lincoln and later Grand Island. Pete and his brother, Kurt, always teamed up on whatever project they were working on which included a hotrod minibike. Later Pete and Kurt fed feeder hogs that their dad would buy at the Sale Barn which they sold to earn their money, along with riding and training horses for numerous people in the area.

Donald “Rusty” George Lepper, age 85, of Danbury, passed away at his home on November 16, 2021. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday afternoon, December 16, 2021 at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Jim Jones and Michael Simmonds providing words of comfort.

Jan McCarville (née Hix) unexpectedly went to meet her Savior on December 6, 2021 at McCook Community Hospital. Spending her life attending others, she herself was attended in death by her husband, James, and her four children.

Shirley Ann Phillips age 89 of Cambridge, NE passed away at the CHI St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, NE on December 3, 2021. She was born near Curtis, NE on August 7, 1932, to Donald and Violetta (Petersen) Wood. She attended high School at UNSA in Curtis graduating in 1950. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and attained a Certificate of Normal Training. Shirley taught country school for 2 years near Curtis.

Ardess J. Fisher Winder Cappel, 86, of McCook, passed away on Sunday December 12, 2021 at C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Arapahoe, Nebraska. She was born on February 24, 1935 to J. George and Lorraine (Burrus) Fisher on the family farm in Red Willow County during a blizzard. She was the youngest of five children and grew up and graduated from Danbury, Nebraska.
