Arapahoe Gala supports community projects

The Arapahoe Gala Committee, partnering with the Arapahoe Area Foundation, are thrilled to announce that this year’s gala event resulted in a $63,000 donation to the Crystal Theatre. The 5th Annual Gala event was held on April 13th at the Ella Missing Center in Arapahoe with nearly 200 people in attendance.

Oxford Board discusses employee wages

OXFORD - During the regular meeting of the Oxford Village Board of Trustees talked about employees and wages on Monday, June 10. Trustee Keithen Hamilton presented to the board some numbers and ideas on increasing wages and employee numbers. The Village has been short three employees for quite some time and has been unable to replace them. They now have two part time employees that are helping out. Public Works Director Duane Hoffman said the one recently hired is doing well and willing to learn. Hamilton presented the idea of eliminating one of the vacant positions and distribute the budgeted for wages across the other employees.

SV Board has first reading of policy updates

OXFORD - The Southern Valley School board had the first reading of their board policy updates during their regular meeting on Monday, June 10, 2024 at Southern Valley. Superintendent Bryce Jorgenson went over the updates with the board which took the majority of the time at the meeting.

Arapahoe City Council approves down payment assistance program

ARAPAHOE - The Arapahoe City Council approved a program for a down payment assistance program at their meeting on June 4, 2024. There was lengthy discussion and ideas given on what the program should offer with varying opinions. They also don’t want to double this program with what is offered at Northern Estates. The program will be a 10% assistance up to $20,000. The borrower would make payments on half of it for ten years with no interest and the remainder would be forgiven after ten years. If the homeowner leaves early they would owe the entire amount.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department reminds you to protect yourself and your horses against West Nile Virus (WNV) by taking steps to prevent mosquito bites and getting horses vaccinated. There is no vaccine for humans. The most common symptoms in humans are fever, body aches, and fatigue that can last for weeks or months. Less often, people develop severe illness such as swelling in the brain or spinal cord leading to weakness, paralysis, or death.

Helberg inducted into NSWCA Hall of Fame

GRAND ISLAND - Longtime Southwest - and Republican Valley - wrestling coach Jay Helberg was inducted into the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. Helberg, along with 14 other individuals, was formally inducted during a banquet held in Grand Island Saturday night, honoring his 31 years as a wrestling coach.
While he once considered himself fiery, the always-calm Jay Helberg, pictured here at the State Tournament with assistant coach Dillon Fries, was inducted into the NSWCA Hall of Fame Saturday in Grand Island.
