Has anyone noticed that the wind has been blowing?? Monday, especially, wasn’t a nice day. And I was out in it most of the day on the mower. Just for the record, I’m caught up on my mowing. After about 10 hours in the saddle. It doesn’t usually take me that long but I had gotten behind, plus, with all the rain we’ve had this spring, everything was growing so fast. I’ve also spent quite a few hours on the four wheeler spraying weeds and noxious grass. The effects are showing!

Local pool teams qualify for Las Vegas Championship

“Never Give Up” and “The Burton Bunch”, both out of TJ’s Family Fun Center in McCook will advance to the American Poolplayers Association (APA) World Pool Championships in Las Vegas after winning the Western Nebraska APA World Qualifier Tournaments held at Eagles Club in North Platte.

Annual Summer Stocker/Yearling Tour focuses on marketing yearling cattle

The stocker/yearling sector of the cattle industry offers flexibility and an opportunity for new producers to get started in the business. Nebraska Extension beef systems team is offering a chance to learn from producers with established stocker/ yearling operations July 11 during the fifth annual Summer Stocker/Yearling Tour near Bassett, Nebraska.

Gina Hofaker, Dawson County 4-H Extension Assistant “All Critters Great and Small” was the theme of the 2024 Dawson County 4-H Camp at Camp Comeca south of Cozad. 23 campers, 4 counselors, and 3 staff gathered June 4th through June 6th for fun, fellowship, and education in a camp setting.

Unit 199 American Legion Auxiliary Convention will be June 21-23

Unit 199 of the American Legion Auxiliary met on June 13, in regular session in the community building with seven members present. After Presentation of the Colors, Prayer, Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble, President Marlene Witte called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. The minutes of the May meeting were read. Sue made a motion that they be approved as corrected. Sandy seconded. The motion passed.

State Board of Education Update

The State Board of Education met in Lincoln on June 7, 2024. One important topic that has concerned parents, teachers, administrators, and taxpayers alike is reading instruction. Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) staff is designing the system that will guide Nebraska schools and educator preparation programs in delivering evidence-based reading instruction.
