MAYWOOD - Top-seeded Maywood/Hayes Center coasted to a victory behind a strong defensive performance and third-seeded Southwest stunned second-seeded Arapahoe Tuesday night at the Subdistrict D1-11 Tournament.

Area boys basketball teams are the final entrants into postseason play, which begins Monday at subdistricts. Arapahoe, Cambridge, Southern Valley and Southwest will contend at the Subdistrict D1-11 Tournament, hosted by Bertrand beginning Monday with the Warriors and Eagles squaring off.

Eleven area boys wrestlers reached the Class D State Tournament by qualifying from two different district tournaments this past weekend, including four district champions. From the District D-4 Tournament in Bartley, Arapahoe’s Briggs Hill remained unbeaten on the season with a first place finish at 144 pounds.

BENKELMAN - A night after ending Wallace’s season with a 50-25 victory, the Medicine Valley girls basketball team saw its season come to a close against the top-ranked team in the State, Dundy County Stratton, at the D2-9 Subdistrict Tournament.

STAPLETON - The Southwest boys basketball team closed out its regular season with consecutive wins, downing Axtell, 70-25, and Sandhills Valley, 58-28, to improve to 9-13 entering next week’s subdistrict tournament.

The Hi-Line boys basketball team saw a fourth quarter lead melt away to hot-shooting South Loup Friday in a 63-54 defeat. The Bulls had built a 4237 lead through three quarters, but the Bobcats dropped 26 points in the final eight minutes to rally for the victory.

With subdistrict play scheduled to begin next week, the Maywood/Hayes Center boys basketball team continued to prepare with games against Wauneta-Palisade and Chase County. MHC kicked off its week by steamrolling WP 73-39 Feb.

As the postseason quickly approaches, the Medicine Valley boys basketball team ran its record to 13-8 with a Friday matchup with Dundy County Stratton the only game remaining on its regular season schedule.
