Furnas County 4-H Carnival set for April 18th

The Furnas County 4-H Council and Furnas County 4-H Clubs are excited to present the 2026 4-H Carnival to be held Saturday, April 18th beginning at 6:00 pm at the Ella Missing Center in Arapahoe. Come on out and enjoy some hot dogs, homemade cake and ice cream, play games, and win prizes! There will be lots of door prizes donated by area businesses so be sure to purchase tickets from a Furnas County 4-H’er!

Hi-Line boys, Cambridge girls finish third at Hi-Line Invite

ELWOOD - The Hi-Line boys and the Cambridge girls each took third place to lead local teams at the Hi-Line Invite Thursday. For the Bulls, their 400 relay team of Justin Ervin, Brody Diefenbaugh, Cooper Knackstedt and Kane Cochrane ran a 44.93 to take first place.
Cambridge’s Lydia McGowen, pictured alongside Arapahoe’s Grace Andrews, nearly broke the school record in winning the 1,600 run at Hi-Line Thursday. She then shattered the record Tuesday at the DCS Invite with a time of 5:24

Trojans take title at Bulls Invite

JOHNSON LAKE - Led by the individual champion, the Cambridge boys golf team medaled three and captured their first team title at an invite in at least four years Tuesday at the Hi-Line Invite at Johnson Lake.
BENKELMAN - While resetting his own school record, Southwest’s Houston Billeter carded a 73 at the Dundy County Stratton Invite Tuesday and led the Roughriders to a fourthplace finish at the Invite. Billeter finished third individually. Brett Blume also medaled, taking 14th with an 85. Dylan Cornwell carded an 89, Jaxton Payton shot a 98 and Alex Lashley finished with a 117.

Congressman Smith visits the area

Congressman Adrian Smith, who represents Nebraska’s Third District, visited the area last week with stops in Cambridge and Alma Wednesday and Elwood and Curtis Thursday. Smiths visits were generally with community leaders, including mayors, local government representatives and business leaders.

Drought intensifies with precipitation chances scarce

The U.S. Drought Monitor is published weekly by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The latest update shows that areas of extreme drought have doubled in Nebraska. Locally, light precipitation fell last week and forecasts early this week showed chances again this weekend, but those have dwindled. The chart below compares the latest observations to those of recent past.
