Clarice Jewel Reed, 92 years of age, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Bickford of Grand Island Assisted Living in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was born on December 23, 1929, in Baker, Montana, the youngest of eight children, to George and Nellie (Horner) Richey. Clarice’s family ran a small ranch 40 miles south of Baker. She attended her first three years of school in a one-room schoolhouse. During the winters from third through eighth grades, Clarice joined her mother and several siblings in Miltonvale, Kansas, where Clarice attended town school while her siblings attended college. In the summers they returned to Montana, where Clarice helped to run the ranch. She attended and graduated from Baker High School with the class of 1947. Clarice was a skilled horsewoman who raised and sold horses. She helped to manage the cattle and at times helped her father herd sheep.

In September of 1947, Clarice went to live in Billings, Montana and worked at the Deaconess Hospital as a Nurses Aide. In 1948, Clarice moved to Norbeck, South Dakota, and lived near her parents until 1949, she then moved to Concordia, Kansas where two of her brothers lived. There she worked for Fairmont Foods Co., where she met her husband.

On November 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to James Jay Reed at the Christian Church in Stockton, Kansas. This union was blessed with six children Charlene Paula, Viola Jane, Martin Jay who only lived two days, Irvin Jerrold, Marvin Duane who was stillborn, and Richard Joseph who passed away at 3 months of age.

In 1951, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska, and then in 1953, Jay went to work for the Railroad and Clarice focused on tending to their home and children. They lived in Brush, Colorado, for 4 years and then in Akron, Colorado for 6 years. While in Akron, Clarice worked at the Washington County Hospital as a Nurses Aide.

In 1964, Clarice moved to Axtell, Nebraska, and then to Stamford, Nebraska, in 1965 where she worked for the Harlan County Hospital for 16 years, retiring in 1990. She and Jay enjoyed their retirement and the freedom to be “footloose and fancy-free” until his death in 2008.

In 2019, Clarice moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where she lived until her death.

Clarice was a member of the Stamford United Presbyterian Church until it closed and then worshipped at the Evangelical Free Church in Oxford.

Clarice was a member of the Triple P Club in Stamford, the Birthday Club, and intermittently helped with the local newsletter.

Clarice enjoyed crocheting, sewing, baking, traveling, and puzzles. She was particularly fond of jigsaw and crossword puzzles.

In addition to her three infant children and her husband, Clarice was preceded in death by her parents, and all seven siblings.

Clarice leaves to celebrate her life: daughter, Charlene Stanley and her husband, Tom; daughter, Viola Gaffaney and her husband, Todd; son, Irvin Reed and his wife, Roberta; six grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; eleven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
