JOHNNY C. NELSON
A Funeral Service for Johnny C. Nelson will be held on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Murray Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the Moses Hill Cemetery, rural Loomis, Nebraska.
Johnny Clair Nelson, 81 years of age, of Holdrege, died on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Johnny was born on December 9, 1939, in Holdrege, at his grandmother’s house, the eldest of five children, born to Vernon C. and Dorothy J. (Johnston) Nelson. He received his education from Loomis Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1957.
Following his education, Johnny began farming with his father. In 1962, Johnny enlisted in the United States National Guard and was active for 6 ½ years until his discharge in 1968.
On August 10, 1958, Johnny was united in marriage to Evelyn M. “Evie” Brewster at the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis and to this union, they were blessed with one son, David, who he farmed with for many years. The family made their home on a farm near Loomis, where they farmed and raised livestock. Johnny and Evie loved to travel and entertain guests. Johnny loved to people watch and share the Gospel with people at the mall, while Evie shopped. On Tuesday, August 10, 2021, Johnny and Evie would have celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Johnny was a member of the First Baptist Church in Holdrege, and later the Trinity Evangelical Free Church. He served for many years as an usher, Sunday school teacher, and participated on many boards. He served with evangelism through Gideon’s International, the jail ministry, and the Salvation Army bell ringing. Johnny also served on the Phelps County Fair Board, for many years.
Johnny loved the Phelps County Fair and was very passionate for youth involvement in 4-H. His love for Jesus led to a lifetime of sharing his faith and enjoying many bible studies. Above all, Johnny was a family man who loved spending time with his son, and later, his four granddaughters and attending all of their activities. He was known as, “Grandpa Sweetheart” to his granddaughters and their friends. He always told the girls how much he loved them and rarely missed their activities.
Johnny was preceded in death by: his parents; brother-in-law, Ronald Brewster; sister-in-law, JoAnn Howsden and her husband, Bob; and nephew, Wesley Allen Nelson.
Johnny is survived by his faithful and devoted wife, Evie Nelson of Holdrege; his son: Dave Nelson and his wife, Laurie of Holdrege; four granddaughters: Abbie McDermott and her husband, Jake of Woodbury, Minnesota; Sydney, Alivia, and Lainey Nelson of Holdrege; two sisters: Barbara Clinch and her husband, John of Grand Island, Nebraska; and Julie Nelson and her husband, James of Loomis, Nebraska; two brothers: Vernon James Nelson and his wife, Marvel of Holdrege; and Wesley Nelson and his wife, Connie of Holdrege; three sisters-in-law: Donna Brewster of McCook, Nebraska; Carolyn Fulmer and her husband, Jim of Simla, Colorado; and Judy Hunt of Hebron, Nebraska; one brother-in-law, Robert Brewster of North Platte, Nebraska; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Johnny’s honor, and kindly suggested to: Gideon’s International; Missions at Trinity Evangelical Free Church; or to Axios Workforce and Talent Development Inc.
