Louis “Sonny” F. Borges

Louis “Sonny” Fredrick Borges was born on February 13, 1944, in Trenton, Nebraska, to Martin Louis and Elizabeth Marie (Anderson) Borges. A graduate of Wood River High School, Sonny pursued further education at the University of Nebraska Kearney, focusing on dairy farming.

In 1963, Sonny married Judy Roth, and together they welcomed three children: Martin, Cindy, and Robert. He later married Violet Striker in 1972, expanding their family with the addition of Terry, Theresa, Twylla, Taby, Tim, and their son, Louis. The family settled in Southwest Nebraska, calling both Trenton and Palisade home.

Sonny’s professional journey included work at Rains and Williams Oil Company and founding Sonny and Sons Welding in Trenton, where his skills as a welder were appreciated by customers for miles around. Alongside Vi, he owned and operated Vi’s Last Resort from 1994 until 2008.

A man of diverse interests, Sonny enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, and camping, and held a deep love for Nebraska football. His participation in pool leagues led to many cherished friendships. Above all, Sonny treasured the time spent supporting the activities of his children and grandchildren.

Sonny passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at the Wauneta Care and Therapy Center in Wauneta, Nebraska.

He was 82 years of age.

Sonny will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Borges and Elizabeth Borges-King; wife, Vi Borges; daughter, Theresa Shnoor; daughter- in-law, Dawn Borges and brother, Charles “Chuck” Borges.

Sonny is survived by his children: Martin “Marty” Borges and his wife, Becky of Grand Island, Nebraska, Cindy Borges of Trenton, Robert “Bob” Borges of Cambridge, Nebraska, Louis Borges II and wife, Samantha of Grand Island, Terry Schnoor of Grand Island, Twylla Robison and husband, Jim of Trenton, Tabetha “Taby” Borges of Trenton and Timothy “Tim” Schnoor also of Trenton.

His legacy also lives on in the lives of his grandchildren: M. Broges II, Eric Lucas, Carly Raker and husband, Ray, Emily Borges, Hunter Borges, John Viox, and Jacob Viox and wife, Nicole.

Sonny is also survived by his great-grandchildren, a large extended family and countless friends.

Services were held 11:00 AM on Monday morning, September 14, 2026 at the Church of God in Trenton. Cremation will follow services and a private familia inurnment in the Cornell Cemetery will take place at a later date.
