Cambridge boys defeat Loomis, now 5-0
CAMBRIDGE - The Cambridge boys basketball team kept its unbeaten start to the season in tact with a gritty 66- 59 win over Loomis Tuesday night.
Coupled with a thirdquarter surge to push the Trojans past South Loup on the road Friday, Cambridge improved to 5-0 before heading to Cozad (3-0) Thursday.
Cambridge led almost throughout against Loomis and used a 12-3 run, keyed by three triples from Derek Trompke, to start the third quarter to go up 41-26.
But the lead dissipated in a blink.
Loomis suddenly broke down Cambridge’s defense on the dribble and ramped up full-court pressure to close within 44-41 through three.
The Wolves took their first lead at 45-44, but a Carson Trompke three put Cambridge back in front 50-47. The Trojans then got three-straight stops on defense and the Wolves fell into foul trouble.
Cambridge went 11-for-19 at the free throw line over the final five minutes, making just enough to expand the lead to three possessions.
Loomis closed within five on multiple occasions, but could get no closer.
Derek Trompke scored 21 to lead Cambridge, knocking down five threes. Dahlton Wood battled foul trouble, but scored 13 and controlled the defensive glass down the stretch. Carson Trompke and CJ Fiene each scored a dozen.
Friday, the Trojans battled South Loup to a 27-27 draw into halftime, but outscored the Bobcats 20-6 in the third to take control. From there, they coasted you the finish in a 61-47 victory.
Fiene and Derek Trompke each scored 16 to lead the Trojans while Wood and Carson Trompke each added 10.
