Cambridge girls move past Loomis
CAMBRIDGE - The Cambridge girls basketball team ended a two-game skid with a 45-33 win over Loomis Tuesday.
Cambridge led throughout and fought off a secondhalf Loomis rally with stingy defense and strong shooting at the charity stripe.
The Trojans shot just 29 percent from the field, but knocked down 14 of 19 free throws to hold off the Wolves, who sliced a 13-point lead to five before Cambridge scored nine of the final 11 points of the contest.
Paige Klumpe led a balanced offense with 11 points and Autumn Deterding and Jacey Kent each scored nine while Breelle Miller added eight. Deterding snared 12 rebounds and Miller swiped five steals. Jalen Kent dealt three assists.
Cambridge led 6-3 after a quarter with five points in the final three minutes of the quarter. The Trojans pushed the lead to 10-3 before settling for a 20-12 lead at the break.
Loomis pulled within 22-17 and 36-31 in the second half before it’s offense ran aground late. Cambridge controlled the boards, outrebounding Loomis 35-26.
The win followed a 57-36 defeat at South Loup Friday in which the Trojans were dominated in the middle quarters.
Cambridge had led 12-9 in the first quarter, but the Bobcats surged in front with a 17-point second quarter, then blew the game open in the third, outscoring the Trojans 15-2 to lead 45-20 headed to the fourth.
Deterding scored 17 to lead Cambridge.
The Trojans travel to Cozad Thursday before competing at the Pleasanton Tournament Monday and Tuesday.
