Cattle Trail Tournament comes to a close
MCCOOK-Friday the Cattle Trail Tournament continued and on the girl's side of things, in the consolation bracket Southwest was set to take on Dundy County-Stratton. The Roughriders were able to take care of business in that one winning big 67-37.
At first, though, the Tigers came out strong as they led 14-13 over Southwest. But in the next three periods, the Roughriders outscored the Tigers 54-23 to capture the win. Caylin Barnett had a big time game with 23 points on 10-19 shooting. Bailey Truksa poured in 19 points on 7-11 shooting.
On the winner's side of the bracket, Arapahoe took on Wauneta-Palisade and fell 59-46 in the semifinals. The Warriors played consistent basketball on the offensive side, but defensively they allowed at least 14 points in each quarter, struggling to slow down the Broncos. Sophomore Sabrina Jacobsen was the only Warrior to get into double figures as she scored 10 points in the loss.
The other semifinal matchup featured Medicine Valley and Maywood-Hayes Center Friday evening. The Wolves got the better of the Raiders winning 41-30. The Raiders had a nice lead at halftime in a defensive battle, at 16-10, but a 31-point outburst from the Wolves allowed them to take over and never look back.
Olivia Hansen led the way for Maywood-Hayes Center with 17 points. Medicine Valley's Stella Heapy had a nice output with 11 points. One of the key stats in this one also was the free-throw line as The Wolves were 21-30 and the Raiders were 3-11.
Saturday, the action continued with consolation matchups and the championship game. For Southwest, they took on Decatur Community in the fifth-place game. The Roughriders used a stout defensive effort to capture the win. Southwest started out with a narrow advantage at 7-4 after the first quarter, but in the second period, they opened things up and outscored the Red Devils 13-7 to lead 20-11 at the half. In the second half, It remained consistent for Southwest as they outscored Decatur Community 18-12 to close it out.
Caylin Barnett had a monster game to lead the way for Southwest with 18 points on an efficient 7-12 shooting. The Roughriders also were solid on the glass grabbing 25 rebounds, 13 of them offensive.
In the third-place game, Arapahoe and Medicine Valley battled. The Raiders were able to come away with a narrow victory, 42-39. Through three quarters, the Raiders had a nice lead of 34-24. In the final stanza, the Arapahoe Warriors though made things very interesting. The Warriors outscored Medicine Valley 15-8 to close the gap, but couldn't finish things out to get the win.
Stella Heapy had a fantastic game with 22 points for Medicine Valley. Arapahoe was led by Sabrina Jacobsen and her 13 points. For the Warriors, the struggles at the free-throw line were the story as they were just 7-24.
In the championship game, Maywood-Hayes Center won 56-51 over Wauneta-Palisade. The Broncos started out on fire leading 20-8 after the first quarter. In the second period, they extended their leading continuing to play at a high level, leading 38-22. In the second half the Wolves outscored Wauneta-Palisade 34-13 to get the victory including a 24 point outburst in the final quarter.
Olivia Hansen again had a massive game with 31 points, including five made three pointers in the contest for Maywood-Hayes Center. As a team, the Wolves shot 75% from the free throw line. The Wolves struggled when it came to grabbing rebounds as the Broncos had 40 to Maywood-Hayes Center's 29, but timely buckets were key for the Wolves in their win.
MCCOOK-On Friday evening the Cattle Trail Tournament rolled on as a handful of area boys teams competed on the hardwood. On the consolation side of the bracket, Southwest batled against Decatur Community and won in a nail-biter, 42-41. Junior Hunter Cunningham had a nice game for the Roughriders as he recorded 15 points. Kaden Day also had a nice game with nine points.
The Arapahoe Warriors took on Wauneta-Palisade and won via blowout, 44-23. The main difference in the game for the Warriors was a strong first quarter in which they led 19-4. The Warriors continued to grow their lead as they went to the intermission up 26-7. In the second half, Arapahoe just maintained their lead outscoring the Broncos 18-16.
Junior Ander Wasenius had a solid game with 13 points, including three triples in the effort. The shooting numbers weren't great for the Warriors at 36%, but they nabbed 31 rebounds on the night a ten offensive boards.
On the winner's side of the bracket, Medicine Valley had a tough one against a gritty Hitchcock County squad. The Falcons were able to take the victory, albeit a narrow margin 30-28 over the Raiders.
Maywood-Hayes Center then took on Dundy County-Stratton in the semifinals on Friday night. The Wolves fell in the game 47-36. Maywood-Hayes Center started out strong, scoring half of their points in the first quarter, as they led 18-6. From their, the Tigers outscored the Wolves 31-18 in the next three periods to secure the victory. Maywood-Hayes Center had a nice game from Haydn Farr as he put up 11 points in the game.
On Saturday, Arapahoe and Southwest battled one another in the consolations. The Roughriders were able to secure 5th place by taking the Warriors down 44-38 for 5th place in the tournament. The Roughriders jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back.
Hunter Cunningham had another nice game for the Roughriders pouring in 10 points again. Arapahoe was led by Cooper Wendland and Tyler Miller each scored 10.
In the third place contest, Medicine Valley took on Maywood-Hayes Center. The Raiders won 47-36. Maywood-Hayes Center led at halftime 19-11, but the Raiders took over in the second half outscoring the Wolves 36-17 and controlled the game to secure the win.
Jhett Sellers led the way for the Wolves with nine points.
