Championing Small Businesses

Body
In 1959, the Oklahoma Sooners’ football team arrived in Lincoln carried by the momentum of a 74-game conference winning streak. It had been 17 long years since the Nebraska Cornhuskers had last defeated them. On paper, the Sooners dominated; however, the Huskers came out on top, 25-21. It was an upset for the Husker history books; one so momentous that classes were canceled the following Monday to celebrate.

The Steer-Heifer Price Difference: Implications for Herd Expansion

Body
by TaraLee Hudson, Elliott Dennis The price difference between steers and heifers has long been a focal point for cattle market analysts, cow/calf producers, feedlot operators, and other industry stakeholders, providing insights into market trends, herd expansion, and feeder cattle demand. Herd expansion remains a lingering question and a topic of ongoing debate in 2025. Current industry headwinds, unlike those of previous cyclical shifts, are becoming increasingly relevant as the industry continues to define the trough of the ongoing cyclical contraction. Amid various confounding factors, revisiting the steerheifer differential provides important clarity in reevaluating this question.

SD BAND: Bridging Rural Behavioral Healthcare needs in South Dakota

Body
By Ryan Groeneweg, Ed.S., BCBA As a school psychologist working for a small public school, I remember a teacher asking me to observe a student in her classroom. She expressed concerns about an elementary student’s unusual behavior, lack of playing with classmates, lack of communication and even some unusual motor movements, including flapping her hands. This was in 2001, and I was experiencing my first referral for a student who would eventually receive an educational diagnosis of autism.

The Golden Rules of Dementia

Body
Dementia is a progressive condition that results in decline in cognitive function. People with dementia have increasing difficulties with short term memory, thinking, and reasoning. For family members it can be hard to watch the decline in a loved one who is struggling with dementia. Interacting when someone has dementia can be difficult. Following these three Golden Rules can help. Rule number 1: Do not ask direct questions. Asking someone with dementia if they remember your name or remember what they had for breakfast can be distressing. Someone with dementia may not be able to find the answer you are looking for and can feel put on the spot to come up with an answer.

Nebraska: The Birthplace of Arbor Day

Body
Before Nebraska was called the “Cornhuskers”, we were known as “The Tree Planters.” It seems ironic, given our state is characterized by its expansive Great Plains and rolling Sandhills. However, in 1895, the Nebraska legislature passed a bill establishing Nebraska’s nickname in honor of their tree planting efforts.
