Southwest School Board addresses budget questions, contracts, and pay raises

The Southwest Public School Board called the monthly meeting to order at 7:31 PM. All board members were present. The board approved the meeting agenda, prior claims, prior minutes, and treasurer’s report. The board then adhered to Derek Meyers’ request to be added to the agenda to discuss budget questions. Meyers questioned Southwest’s substantial general and depreciation funds, noting that such high numbers impacted property tax. No specific action was requested or taken.

FCCLA Peer Education Conference

Several Medicine Valley FCCLA members attended the Peer Education Conference recently. Jordy Phillips helped to plan and lead the conference. During opening session it was also announced that Giavanna Doyle and Ashtyn Contrerez are finalist for the 2024-2025 State Peer Officer Team! They will continue the process at State Conference in April.

Local volunteers donate to ag families suffering from Texas fire

Local farmers and agriculture families banded together to donate about 225 tons of feed to farmers suffering losses from the Smokehouse Creek Fire in the Texas panhandle. Thirty to fifty families donated eleven trucks full of hay, cane, oats, mineral tubs, wire, fence posts, and other necessities to farmers and ranchers to feed their livestock and repair damages.
Eleven semi-trucks and two pick-ups made up the convoy headed to Texas.

Eleven qualify for state speech

At the NSAA District D2-4 Speech Meet in Litchfi eld, eleven students from Maywood, Medicine Valley, Elwood, and Eustis-Farnam qualified for the 2024 State Speech Meet. From Maywood, Emma Peterka, Graci Peterka, and Pryce Johnston qualified.
