Oxford Board discusses town whistle

Body
The Village of Oxford Board of Trustees met for their regular meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025 at 5:30 pm. After calling the meeting to order and approving the consent agenda the board held discussion on a couple of topics including the town whistle and sheriff’s contract. Regarding the town emergency whistle, local resident Grace Gugliotti was present. She lives close to the whistle and asked that something be done. She told the board that it hurts the animals ears and she cannot even stay outside when it goes off. Board members told Gugliotti that there were certain specs that needed to be followed in order to receive the funds to put in a new whistle. It is now the only whistle in town, and has a distance it is required to be heard. Parts for the old whistles are obsolete. Gugliotti asked if the whistle could be moved, perhaps to the old school. Board members told her that ideally that building will be gone at some point, and is structurally unsound. Ultimately, the board said they would look at and consider how many times the whistle goes off and the duration of times it goes off. Board Chairman Mike Minarik said there is red tape involved but that “safety is our main concern”. The whistle would be needed in the event of an emergency or storm. Gugliotti told the board that something needs to be done, or she would go to the state emergency management office and state senator, but also offered to help in making calls.
