ELWOOD - At its regular meeting Monday, the Gosper County Commissioners appointed Jesse Naputi as interim Gosper County Sheriff, effective August 1. He will serve the remainder of the term,which runs until January.

ELWOOD - With the Gosper County Fair in full swing this week and the carnival set to open this Thursday, there were still a few volunteers needed to fill vacant spots. A full listing of the carnival shifts can be found on Page 10 with vacant positions highlighted.

100 Years Ago July 30, 1922 The Edison territory received about three inches of rain, the first for nearly a month and just at a time to do the corn the most good. Threshing is progressing and considerable grain is being marketed.

30 Years Ago July 16, 1992 Continued light rains and showers have slowed the wheat harvest in this area. All local elevators said on Tuesday that two or three days of good drying weather would about finish the wheat harvest.

As with many other areas of our world, the staffing shortage has also been felt at Alma Public School. Over the past two school years, the number of substitute teachers available to the school has dwindled, creating various issues in filling in for teachers during absences. When substitute teachers aren’t available, teachers cover for one another during their planning time, combine classes or (as a last resort) have to have special classes canceled. Feeling the urgency to try to fill this need, the Alma Board of Education, administration and teachers collaborated to brainstorm ways to help fill the substitute teacher shortage.

10 years ago Celebrating her 100th birthday on Sunday, July 15 2012 was Katherine Atterberry and was born on July 16, 1912 on the family farm to Henry and Mary Ruff. Mayor Koller read a thank you from the Helms family for the concrete pads for the picnic tables and benches at the Memorial Wall at Arapahoe.

10 years ago Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Nebraska Keith Olsen and Rob Trebilcock present Tri Valley Health System representatives CEO Roger Steinkruger, Christina Houghtelling and Tonya Koeppen with a check for $13,000 to be used to extend TVHS’s healthy youth program. The Cambridge, Arapahoe, and Southwest gathered to take part in a heptathlon at Clint John Field in Cambridge nearly 50 youngsters participated in activities.
