Have you ever heard of the early settlement of Williamsburg that one time was the county seat of Phelps County? It used to exist in the Northwest part of Phelps County just south of the Oregan Trail. In August of 1874, a post office was established at Williamsburg and by 1878, it boasted a population of around 250. It had a schoolhouse, good general stores and a weekly newspaper. However, in 1879, it was voted that the county seat be moved to Phelps Center. The 20 by 14 frame courthouse was then physically picked up and moved the roughly 10 miles from Williamsburg to Phelps Center only to be again relocated to Holdrege in 1884. I went out to the location of Williamsburg and visited the cemetery. There is also a little country Methodist Church by the cemetery. As I walked around the cemetery, I saw a number of graves dated in the late 1880s. I do not know exactly where the settlement was located but it appears that it was just north of the cemetery which is farmland at present. Some of this information comes from Jim McKee.
