Pork in the Park

Body
The Oxford Volunteer Fire Department held their annual Pork in the Park on Monday, July 4th. They served pulled pork and held a live auction with donated baked goods and items. There was a brief delay to the auction when a much needed rain shower poured down on the festivities for about 15 minutes. All the proceeds from the meal and the auction help to pay for the fireworks show hosted by the fire department. They capped off the evening with a wonderful display of fireworks.

Linden bids Center Farewell

Body
The Hilltop Event Center/Golden Generation bid farewell to outgoing director Heather Linden on Wednesday, June 29th. She is moving to Hastings with her family as her husband Jeff has taken a school principal position there. Linden has been the director for the last two years and oversaw a lot of change and improvement during that time. The popular "Dancing Through the Generations" fundraising gala was started. The much needed roof replacement and appliances was also accomplished. They had a farewell party and served cake and ice cream. Linden said she will still be involved behind the scenes as needed. Taking the helm is Jade Hutchens and Carmen Jepsen.

German Methodist Cemetery

Body
Recently, I visited a small pioneer cemetery just north of Oxford, Nebraska. It is located one mile north of highway 6 and highway 46. It only has eighteen graves that date back to the late 1800's and early 1900's. According to Christine Weaver who compiled some information about the cemetery for the Furnas County Genealogy Society, William C. Kellner, a Kansas-Nebraska Methodist Circuit Rider Preacher gave a plot of ground to the German Methodist Church located 4 miles north of Oxford. He gave a one-acre lot for the cemetery. There were several burials and these graves mark some of the first deaths in the county. No one has been buried in the cemetery for over 70 years.
